Nova beats UNC with a buzzer beating three-pointer to win the basketball title game.
Coastal Carolina beats Arizona by one run to win the College World Series. Coastal Carolina!
The Cavs come back from being down 3 games to 1 to beat the Warriors in Games 5, 6, and in an epic Game 7 with Lebron finally bringing a title home to Cleveland.
The CHICAGO CUBS come back from being down 3 games to 1 to beat the Indians in Games 5, 6, and EXTRA INNING GAME 7 to finally win the World Series.
The Clemson Tigers fight back to the CFP Title Game to rematch and beat mighty Alabama on the final play of the game.
The Patriots down 28-3 score 31 unanswered points to win the Super Bowl in OVERTIME on the final play of the game.
We will never see another year like this. Sports are neat.

"Mid-majors" won the D-I men's basketball and baseball championships. "Mid-majors" are #1 and #2 in the current D-I men's basketball polls. Villanova is not a mid-major in basketball. They're a member of the Big East which is as competitive as conferences get. If Dayton or St. Bonaventure or Drake or Valpo or Tulane win - that's a mid-major. I don't particularly consider Gonzaga a mid-major but they are certainly far more so than Villanova. Villanova is a bonafide, basketball power. |

In basketball, the Big East teams are not considered mid-major, I don't even think most of them have football. The Big East actually is the third highest rated conference behind the ACC and Big 12. |

Coastal Carolina would have had zero opportunity to win the Baseball national championship if it had to rely on a beauty contest appointment just to get to the final four. ESPN is losing market share due to technological advances have created alternatives to cable and broadcast TV, and to new competitors in cable sports.
We will be watching more and more of our sports programming on smart TVs, computers and hand held devices via Internet live streaming.
There is no technical reason why every school can't telecast every home game today via Internet live streaming, in association with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Visiting teams could couple the video with their own game announcers. Thus, by subscription, every game for every team could be available via Internet live streaming.
A little history. From 1991 through 1996, there were only two schools for which every football game was televised: Notre Dame and Marshall.
Marshall had its own network, the "Thundering Herd Network". Every football game, except for the few playoff games that were on ESPN, was telecast live via satellite. Marshall fans had game-watching parties every week at sports bars all over the country. Ours were at the Clearwater, FL Beef O'Brady's, where we had as many as 200 Herd fans in attendance. That was possible with early 1990s technology.
That all went away in 1997, due to conference TV deals, when Marshall moved up to D-IA. But, Marshall's telecasts in the early 1990s were every bit as good in quality as were ESPN and broadcast network telecasts.

They have a number of STUPID, high-dollar, long-term contracts... (like the Longhorn Network) At the same time, their business model is disappearing.... due to technological advances. I think they will be FORCED to declare bankruptcy, eventually. Unless, they have been very prescient in their force majeure contract terms. I highly doubt that. They're KILLING Disney. |
