On Nov.28 1942 Boston College was 8-0 and ranked no.1 in the AP poll,WWII was about a year old.BC was to host Holy Cross 4-4-1 and a 3 TD underdog,game was played in Fenway park.B.C. was a juggernaut having allowed only 19 points in 8 games with 5 shut outs.Officials from the Sugar Bowl wer e there to offer B.C. a spot in the Sugar Bowl.Holy Cross started the season 1-3 but in mid season changed their formation to the single wing,The score at 1/2 time was HC 20 BC 6 when the score went across the wire people thought it was a mistake and were dumbfounded.
The final score was HC 55 BC 12. HC accumulated 335 yards of total off,intercepted 6 passes and recovered 4 fumbles,dropped BC to no.8 in the poll,wernt to the Orange Bopwl and lost to Alabama 37-21, Now as Paul Harvey used to say "Hear is the rest of the story"The week of the game BC had planned a celebration for that evening at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub,after the devastating defeat the party was cancelled
At app.10:15 that night a busboy was told to replace a light bulb at the top of an artificial tree in the Melody lounge,it is believed the bulb had been unscrewed by a patron who desired less light with his date .The busboy had to light a match to find the socket,a moment later patrons thought they saw a flicker of light on the Palm Tree,they saw the decorations go up I'm flames and quickly spread to the the ballroom,a fire ball travelled up the stairs to the main ballroom,patrons moved to the exits but the doors opened inward not out,panic ensued and many burned to death.the fire ball then exploded in the Dining area
