This is a two-horse race. Had the vote taken place a month ago, Casey Affleck would have won in a landslide. He won all the end of the year critic awards, he won the Golden Globes, he won the BAFTA award last week. But the one award he didn't win was the SAG which is voted on by fellow actors - that award went to Denzel Washington. Denzel Washington is highly respected in Hollywood, he reprised a role which won him a Tony Award in 2010, he directed his movie. Affleck, on the other hand, has been receiving negative press for a sexual assault allegation from several years ago. They both did great jobs in movies that didn't exactly leave you uplifted as you walked out of the theater. This one is very hard to call so I'm going to cop out and go with the should win/will win approach.
Should win/Casey Affleck Will win/Denzel Washington
And this is not to say that Washington wouldn't be deserving. I just thought Affleck's performance and character was more difficult to play because he was bottling up so much emotion inside.
Here's how I rank them....
1. Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea 2. Denzel Washington - Fences 3. Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge 4. Ryan Gosling - La La Land 5. Viggo Morgenson - Captain Fantastic
Tomorrow I'll finish with Best Director, Screenplays, Animated Feature, Song and Picture.

We're going to see the Shorts on Saturday. Looking forward to it. Need to see Fences, but... it's not showing anywhere here.
