"Generals are always preparing to fight the last war."
It's a quote so widely known and accepted, the origin remains in dispute. Perhaps never, has it been more true than it is today.
I've just started reading "iWAR: War and Peace in the Information Age" by Bill Gertz. It is scaring the CRAP out of me. And today, I realized that I haven't even made it to Chapter 4! (On a kindle, it can be difficult to keep track of my progress).
North Korea, China, Israel and Russia all are reported to be pretty advanced in the art of cyber war. MAYBE, we're also advanced in our ability to attack. We seem to be WOEFULLY unprepared to defend. What Hillary Clinton did, with her unsecured server, was unfathomably stupid. She handled SAP (Special Access Protocol) documents... things like details of future drone strikes. This kind of information is SO SECRET, officials with access are formally authorized to LIE under oath when asked about them. Hillary, from 2009 to 2013, made tons of this stuff available to our enemies. According to Gertz, at least three foreign entities had regular access to her emails: Russia, China and Israel.
Obama has been particularly passive in dealing with cyber threats, and KNOWN attacks. North Korea's hack of Sony, for example, was a case where we absolutely KNEW who it was.. and, we did nothing in return. Obama sent a clear message that we don't take such things seriously.
Great... North Korea has been spending a TON of resources on developing hackers. It's cheaper for them than building weapons. They apparently already have the ability to do great damage to our infra-structure.
The next 'Pearl Harbor' won't come in the form of bombs. It will be when your lights go out.
