How quickly things can backfire.
Trump paid a higher rate than Obama and Sanders....Oops.
Guess that will go down the memory hole quickly.
Fake news backfired.

If Trump fed this to her (and, I think that's likely)... he timing was perfect. The legal aspects of this will now be talked about for several more days. Longer if Sessions initiates an investigation. What fun that would be!

I think it's likely as well.

It could have been one of the more favorable Trump tax returns to have been revealed. It is likely that much of the AMT he paid in 2005 would have been offset in subsequent years.

Maybe not, AMT credits are limited in application to certain situations and the credit cannot drop below the AMT for the tax year. AMT was originally created to make sure that millionaires were subject to a floor of tax...unfortunately Congress has monkeyed with it so much that people at much lower incomes get hit by the AMT.

The AMT was supposedly intended to punish the very wealthiest taxpayers, who used legitimate deductions to reduce their effective tax rates. I use the word "supposedly" because the AMT intentionally wasn't properly indexed. Thus, the AMT now ensnares middle income taxpayers. It is time for a do over on the AMT, or, better yet, abolish it. In 2005, Trump paid $5.3 million in regular income tax and $31 million in alternative minimum tax (AMT). The $31 million became a tax credit for subsequent years. I said that he "likely" could have recovered the AMT he paid in subsequent years. But, you are correct that there are some limitations, which is why I used the word "likely". m.finweb.com/taxes/how-to-claim-alternative-minimum-tax-amt-credit.html
