so #6 is Medical Errors? damn Yea... That caught me eye too..
And, I just heard the other day that (somewhere?, not sure if it was just local) Doctors are now allowed to work 24 hour shifts.
Maybe, it was just in rural hospitals?
I'm thinking, maybe SHORTER shifts, more sleep... to battle this "ERROR CRISIS"?

Just the opposite. Medical errors are understandably more prevalent in major metropolitan hospitals which (1) provide highly complex tertiary care level services (major trauma, transplants, etc.), (2) some are teaching hospitals with medical residents and (3) are super busy. Medical errors are frequently made by nursing personnel and other non-physician medical professionals. Deaths from nosocomial (hospital acquired) infections are typically combined with medical errors, making hospital stays one of the leading causes of death in the U.S.

Just the opposite. Medical errors are understandably more prevalent in major metropolitan hospitals I wasn't trying to say errors were more prevalent in rural hospitals... I was saying, I THINK the report I saw allowing 24-hour shifts was someplace that only applied to rural areas.

It is a proposal for medical residents, who are doctors in training. Medical physician residencies are primarily in large urban hospitals.
Hospital ERs commonly contract with emergency medicine physician groups whose doctors may, by preference, choose to work longer shifts. Some hospitals offer nurses options, such a two 16-hours shifts or three 12-hour shifts per week for 40 hours pay.

I know a couple of medical residency people (neighbors) who already do 24 hour shifts. That's been common for a long time. The report I heard was about physicians. I'll look for it. I think I first heard the report on NBC. That's what we usually watch. They have the strongest local station.

Thanks... That sounds like the report I heard. i am one who is 100% opposed to this, and to ALL the laws that allow doctors to work more than 16 hour shifts. I would limit them to 12. i have quite a lot of experience working long shifts... Both myself, and people working for me. I once worked 32 hours straight, during a Chem plant startup. I don't care what these doctors, or their studies say: it's dangerous. Chemical plant operators are limited, by law, to 16 hour shifts. Are doctors any less critical? I don't think so?

The strongest advocates of the excessive work hours for medical residents are senior medical doctors. They expect young doctors to have to go through the same ordeal they had to endure.
