All is well at our house.
Irma had weakened considerably by the time it reached Tampa Bay. Originally projected at cat 3. We had cat 1 winds for 6 hours. No idea what the max winds were with the gusts. The eye went through Plant City, FL - 10 miles east of our home. I assume that the eye wall passed over our house.
For the first time ever, we didn't lose electricity!
Branches all over front and back yards - fortunate that I had 3 oaks removed a few weeks ago. No apparent damage to our house or tool shed. Our pagoda was rated to withstand 50 mph winds. Some of the reviews complained about damage with less than 50 mph winds. I can't understand how our pagoda survived, but it is undamaged. It isn't even anchored. I had written it off.
No trees down in our neighborhood. Each of the 3 hurricanes that hit us in 2004 took down several trees on my block. Maybe they thinned out the diseased and weaklings.
Irma proved to be a bust in the Tampa - St. Pete region. Fortunately, it had moved inland and weakened.
Almost no gasoline available in Florida anywhere.
The only thing I have to complain about is that my wife would not allow me to drive around in the hurricane - especially with the center of the eye just a few minutes away.

While the media was single-mindedly focused on the potential catastrophe threatening Tampa and St. Pete-Clearwater, which didn't happen, they totally missed the real devastation that was happening on the northeast coast of Florida.

Sounds like you made it through rather well, thank goodness no significant impact.

That was the 5th hurricane to hit our house. I have never experienced anything more than fallen branches. Lots and lots of small fallen branches, but no damage. I did have 3 laurel oaks removed recently, including one that was close to the back of our house that was diseased. I have our grandfather live oak thinned every 3 years, so that the winds would pass through it. It lost only a few small branches, a few minutes to clean up. However, our backyard is totally covered with branches, all from four backyard neighbors' laurel oaks. It will be a job for our lawn service.
Our crazy 40-foot cactus was unharmed. It is growing alongside what looks like a ponderosa pine, but I'm sure it isn't. 50-feet to the first branch. The first owners planted the cactus, that their son won at a school carnival, next to the pine, when it was small, expecting the cactus to die or get run over by a lawnmower in short order. Fast forward 60 years, and both are mind-boggling.
5 hours, maybe 6, of hurricane strength winds in our neighborhood. I haven't seen a single tree that fell (although I can't see most backyards) or damage to any property.
The eye passed 10 miles to our east. Yet Jacksonville, on the opposite side of the state and 200 miles from the eye, suffered catastrophic flooding.
Go figure.

My daughter and son-in-law evacuated Kings Bay and came home on Thursday of last week.
At Kings Bay Sub base, they sent all the nukes out to sea ahead of landfall, and so they released him until this coming Friday.
He was just about to go back inside the wire when they released him so the timing gives him a 2-week break in essence, and he was pretty happy about that.

Sure would like to hear from GG. His FB page says they're OK... have no power, but have drinking water. Couple of trees down in his yard. I guess we'll hear from him eventually.

He might not have Internet.
Just talked to a friend from Wauchula. The eye of Charley passed over his house in 2004. More than $100,000 damage to his home. I gave him my generator. Fast forward 13 years, and he is without electricity and Internet again, and down to 2% on his cell phone.
He tried to start the generator for the first time after 13 years, and it started on the first pull!
Fortunately, no damage to his home this time.

The Marines have the option of 1-week on / 1-week off or 3-on / 3-off.
Given that they are newlyweds, 3 weeks away can be a long time to go without certain "necessities"....
He says the married guys almost never do the 3 / 3 option
He just finished his Bearcat training:

We are good. Lost power for 48 hours but no flooding or damage to the house. Folks more inland near the St. Johns River had to deal with flooding. No fun.
