I'd submit BYU in 1984 who beat a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl to stake claim to the national championship. The 1983 Miami win at least spurred them on to one of the great runs in college football - even though I didn't like them at all...they were pretty dominant. LoL oh yea...
'83 and '84 were very bad years for the old system.
I don't miss that crap.

The mighty SEC won 13 bowl games vs the pathetic Big Eight out of 33 tries....a dominant 39% success rate ....but I'm sure those B8 teams probably wouldn't win a game in the SEC.
It's not that hard to get informed.
