Here's my annual crack at picking the Oscar winners....
Best Director - It's going to be Alphonso Cuaron's night - he's nominated for 5 Oscars but this one is a slam dunk. And his film, Roma, is in position to be the first foreign language movie to ever win Best Picture. Cuaron is also nominated for Best Picture, Foreign Language Film, Cinematography and Original Screenplay.
Best Supporting Actress - Regina King of If Beale Street Could Talk will take this award. Amy Adams will once again be a bridesmaid - I think she's been nominated 6 times and never won.
Best Supporting Actor - Mahershela Ali of The Green Book has won just about every Supporting Actor award this year so look for him to win his second one in 3 years. I think he's more deserving of this one.
Best Actress - I just don't see them giving an acting Oscar to Stefani Germanotto - she'll get her award for Best Song. Look for Glenn Close to win her first Oscar for The Wife.
Best Actor - Rami Malek will win for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. The movie made over $800 million and Malek is the draw. Christian Bale (Vice) is the only one who could take the crown away from the Queen frontman.
Best Picture - I really think Roma is going to make history and become the first foreign language film to take home Best Picture. In doing so, it will also capture Best Foreign Language film and Original Screenplay giving Alphonso Cuaron 4 Oscar for the evening, which also could be a record.
Shallow will win Best Song and Spiderman will take best Animated Feature film. RBG takes top documentary and the best, Won't You Be My Neighbor, wasn't even nominated.
The Favourite and Black Panther will win most of the design awards. Total running time - 3 hours and 40 minutes.

Every year, it gets harder for me to care.
Roma is an awful, boring movie. It’s only nominated because in Hollywood, anything seen as anti-Trump is adored. And anything that is against limits to immigration is deemed to be anti-Trump.

The ONLY award Spike Lee should win is "Most Racist Man in America!"

My favorite movie last year was Ready Player One Mine was Won't You Be My Neighbor but it didn't even get nominated for the Best Documentary - probably because the message was one of love for everyone and in today's climate that doesn't play.
I've watched the Oscars since 1968 when In The Heat of the Night won Best Picture. When the speeches get political I get a snack or go to bathroom, I did that numerous times on Sunday night. But I'm a huge movie fan so I don't let it bother me. I was happy to see the winners for Best Actor and Actress - I actually watched all the nominated films this year and enjoyed most of them.
I'm not a political person. I don't get all worked up about what this person said or that person said - we all have a right to our opinions whether we agree or not. I'm just going to live my life, love the people who fill my world. Life's short, I'm 60 years old now. I used to think I'd take 80 but now that it's only 20 years away, I'm not so sure!

In today's world, it seems no one is allowed to be 'non-political'. The left says people who hold my opinions are evil, and shouldn't be allowed to participate in decision making, or even in comments on internet platforms like Twitter or Facebook. It's pretty hard to stay 100% apolitical. Have you seen BlacKKKLansman? I saw the first half on a plane. (Delta isn't showing it anymore, after a VERY short stint). It COULD have been a really good movie. It was based on true story that was really interesting, and inspiring. There was a book written about it. It's a story that COULD help heal racial divide... given how white and black cops worked together to root out the KKK members. But, Spike Lee had to inject modern day politics into a movie from the 70's. He just HAD to try to make a point that America remains inherently racist. He's not about healing divides... he only wants to make things worse. The real irony is, He won an OScar for adapting the book to a screenplay. The book is probably really good. Spike RUINED the story for the movie, and won an award for doing it. He is a HATE FILLED man. He hates America, and white people in particular. If you think I'm exaggerating, listen to what he says on TV... and read some of his comments. pluralist.com/spike-lee-christopher-columbus-terrorist-morning-joe/Someday, I'll see the last half of the movie... I'd like to know how it ends. But, I won't be PAYING for it. At least, no more than what I pay for the service that provides it... ie Netflix, or whatever.

I watched BlackkKlansman on Sunday - right before the Oscars. I thought it was a pretty good movie but if you haven't seen the end I don't recommend that you do. I'll just leave it at that in the event you do watch it but I felt there really was no reason to go where they went at the end of the film - it would have been better to stay in the 1970's and leave it at that.
It's funny, there was a lot of backlash about Green Book winning Best Picture. I liked Green Book but many felt the story was told from the perspective of the white character - well the book was written by the white character's son, what did they expect? Maybe the Shirley family should write a book and tell the story from their perspective. But what disappointed me more is the movie shows two men from completely different backgrounds coming together and becoming friends despite their differences. It shows a white many who clearly was from a racist background becoming friends with a gay black man in the early 1960's. And the black man is the educated man, the white man is a bouncer, drives garbage trucks but by getting to know the other, they become friends. They experienced the others lives through traveling together and grew to appreciate each other for who they were - I don't know what's wrong with that, even if they did take some liberties with the story.

the movie shows two men from completely different backgrounds coming together and becoming friends despite their differences...... I don't know what's wrong with that,
There's nothing wrong with that except: it doesn't support the narrative that we're ALL truly just a bunch of racists.
The political leaders of today NEVER want to celebrate moments when people come together. They only want to further divide and inflame. That's how they get their money and their power.
They all sicken me.
We DESPERATELY need to be reminded that we all have MUCH MORE in common than we think. We're all in the crazy world together, and we need to help one another, not fight. Sadly, human beings seem more easily programmed for fighting.

Total running time - 3 hours and 40 minutes.
You were close... it was 3 hours, 17 minutes... a bit faster than last year.
We've seen fewer of the top films this year than in any year I can remember.
Have seen: Bohemian Rhaphsody Roma Star in Born Spider-Man Black Panther Half of Black KKLansman
Have not see ANY of the other films in any of the major categories. Just wasn't that interested in any of them. MamaBevo watched Can You Ever Forgive Me on this plane yesterday and said she really liked it.
We probably spent less money at the movies last year than any in our 36 years of marriage. Well, almost 36... it's a day to day thing.

It didn’t run as long because they only gave Tina Fey and Amy Poehler 5 minutes to tell stale, unfunny jokes.

It's his views about 'politics' on his show. I think he is 100% right! Maybe, that's why I loved his show so much... and why, I almost NEVER missed his opening monologue.

I think I'm the Johnny Carson of my family and friends - people bring up politics and I simply say I don't talk politics. My brother, on the other hand, is the Spike Lee of the family - he doesn't give a damn what he says or who he says it to. He is a 100% union man so you can imagine some of the rants he goes on, I can't tell you how many times he's been put into 'Facebook Timeout'. I'm not sure this place would enjoy his antics - he really knows hoew to get under your skin. But he's family and means well. My family reminds me of that Kacey Musgraves song; Family is Family....
They're there for your first year, they give you your first beer When you get your heart broke, they're there for your worst year Don't get you at all, but your apple don't fall too far from 'em They own too much wicker and drink too much liquor You'd wash your hands of them, but blood's always thicker You might look just like 'em, that don't mean you're like 'em But you love 'em
Family is family, in church or in prison You get what you get, and you don't get to pick 'em They might smoke like chimneys, but give you their kidneys Yeah, friends come in handy, but family is family They're there when you're married, divorced, and remarried You fall out of touch, but then someone gets buried And you're right back together like no time has ever gone by Can't live with or without 'em, you might talk about 'em But if someone else does, well, then you'll knock 'em out 'cause When it's all said and done, they're the only ones that you got
Family is family, in church or in prison You get what you get, and you don't get to pick 'em They might smoke like chimneys, but give you their kidneys Yeah, friends come in handy, but family is family Yeah, family is funny, they'll ask you for money Even though they know you ain't got no money They show up at Christmas, get up in your business They might not be fancy, but family is family You might look just like 'em, that don't mean you're like 'em But you love 'em
