This is pretty much state of the art old time mountain music by contemporary players including the great Bruce Molsky fiddling.
Mrs Hen was a mainstay at this festival and played bass and sang with these kind of musicians all week long in jam sessions.

I often wish I had that kind of musical talent. I’ve been around it enough to recognize and appreciate it. But, I ain’t got it.
Clearly, this was a bond you and Mrs Hen shared.

Yep, you're so right about that, Bevo. Our cemetery monument , in addition to names and B/D dates, will say 'bonded in love and music on the other side '. It's been ord
btw, that gal in the video just absolutely has the most gorgeous clawhammer banjo style !

Yes indeed, Bevo. Thanks for asking. Music friends from near and far have offered to come by for some jamming and I accept every offer. These kind of music friends and this kind of music really can be healing. I've always heard that and now I know. Got dear friends of Mrs. Hen from York County , Pa and Pickens Co. S.Carolina coming soon for jamming and remembering her.
...and I'll be seeing that band in the video in concert in a couple weeks

No man is a failure, who has friends. I think I read that somewhere.
I'm sure Mrs. Hen is thrilled to be listening from a ring side seat!

Thanks Bevo, buddy. You 'get' it.

It was requested by so many of her friends. LMK when it's available... I'd be honored to BUY a copy. The older I get, the more I like "bluegrass", and.. yea... I guess "Old tyme" music. I like most all music. I'm practicing now to sing the Durufle Requiem in a few weeks with my church choir. Different kind of music, but really beautiful. We just came back from a cruise this week. I sang in the 'Karaoke Contest" where, if you get in the top 3 during the week, you get to come back and sing in a big "Finals"... The first night, I sang Sinatra's "My Way"... a classic, that is done on every cruise ship. But, I love it. It's well in my range, I know every word by heart, and I gave it my all... the crowd seemed to like it. I won my night. For the Finals, I changed it up.. a bit... and sang a soft pop/rap song by Nelly called, "Just a Dream". I taught myself all the words (there's a LOT of them)… and, brought down the house. I think, NO ONE was expecting a fat old gray haired man like me to sing Nelly. The moderator looked at me like I was NUTS when I told her the song I wanted. I came in 2nd place, to a hot young blonde who sang Carrie Underwood's 'Before He Cheats" better that Carrie ever sang it! Hell, I would have voted for her ALL DAY. But, I was happy with what I did. Like I said.... I'm OK, but not a 'REAL' talent. I'm good enough to know it when I see/hear it. That gal that beat me was GREAT!

What amazes me is how effortless they look - and I know it isn't easy! I tried to teach myself guitar and was a complete failure - I still tried to do a solo at my son's wedding which brought down the house - in laughter! It was easier sitting in my basement plucking at the strings than standing on the stage in front of 200+ people...in the dark, with no music to follow. I knew it was going to be a complete disaster but I did it anyway. My son's father-in-law told me I had balls!

Well, nice going Bevo. That takes balls to get up a sing like that.Glad you seem to differentiate between Bluegrass and Old Time. Most people oriented to American pop-ular music have no clue. Bluegrass is often mis -perceived as being somehow 'old' and 'mountain'. It's neither. Bluegrass is approximately the same age as rock and all the Bluegrass founders ( Monroe, Scruggs etc) were flatlanders. Like I said.... I'm OK, but not a 'REAL' talent. I'm good enough to know it when I see/hear it. That gal that beat me was GREAT!

I DIDN'T appreciate the difference between 'Bluegrass' and 'Old Time' a few years ago. You taught me, and I was smart enough to see the difference. "Old Time' is more structured, a bit more basic, and metered in time. I like it, a lot. But, I like a lot of Bluegrass too. :-) My Mother's father used to play guitar in local bands in East Texas. He sometimes played with Earl Scruggs... in family gatherings, not in public. Earl was his cousin, back from Shelby, NC (where my Grandfather was born). That all happened many years before I arrived. But, I heard many stories. I didn't get to hear my Grandfather play much, since... when I was young, he got three fingers chopped off while working on a lawn mower. But, I do remember hearing him when I was really little. Since I was in the third grade, I've been OK singing in front of people. I know I'm not 'great', but... I sing in tune. And that counts for a lot. Plus, I have learned to trust the "adrenaline" of singing in front of others... it strengthens my voice.

They definitely hit that elusive 'groove' and when that happens you just enjoy the ride and each other because the tune is on auto pilot.

Wow..you have a small connection to musical royalty (Scruggs) !!! BTW, I love Bluegrass also...both the old 'soulful' stuff and the amazing technical virtuosity of the contemporary players.. I was honored to play on a project called 'Close Kin' which mixed various OT & BG players together for some tunes and songs.

Interesting concept.... still a little difficult for me to really tell the difference. The banjo is different, I guess... plus Old Time just seems faster, with a more driven rhythm.
