MamaBevo and I finally watched this movie, at home.. this weekend.
Doc, I can't believe you watched this in a theater with your daughter?? Well, I believe it.. because NONE of the previews gave ANY indication about what was to come. But, how uncomfortable must that have been?
There was a lot to like about the movie. Good actors, interesting direction, incredible costuming and sets.... but, Best Film? Best Actress? I never could get it.
Now that I've seen it? I understand. It hits ALL the "HollyWeird" buttons. They celebrate anything perverse.
MOST OVER-RATED movie of the year.... but, not unworthy watching, if it's free.

Yes, there were a couple uncomfortable moments - especially the 'I like her tongue' line...TMI there. Our daughter is 26 so it's not like she's oblivious to what was going on. When she was in high school we almost went to see Black Swan together - that would have really been uncomfortable.
The actresses in The Favourite were all outstanding. I think Emma Stone is awesome and Olivia Colman is great. We watched her in a Netflix show called Broadchurch and to see her in that and then The Favourite gives you a great appreciation for her acting skills. Plus, being English, I don't think she's a hollywood snob like a lot of the others - Emma Stone seems fairly grounded, too. I agree that Best Picture was a stretch but I was glad to see Olivia Colman win - I really like her.
Another uncomfortable theater experience with our daughter occurred when she was in the 6th grade. We took her to see the play Mamma Mia - she loves theater and we've taken her to a lot of plays. Well, there's a line where the leading actress says ejaculation and without a beat, my daughter turns to me and says, 'Dad, what's an ejaculation?' I said 'I'll tell you at intermission' but the topic never came back up...to this day! Pretty sure she knows, now. We also took her to see Rent when she was in the 7th grade and let her bring a friend - that was a brilliant move, had to apologize to the kids parents for the things she was exposed to that night!

LOL. I don't recall ever seeing Olivia Colman in anything. She definitely was a miserable old bitty in this movie. I just didn't see the role as being all that big to justify "Best Actress". Guess there weren't that many great roles last year. I'm not sure Olivia was the best actress, even in that movie! But, I'll grant that they all were good. From what my wife says, "Olivia is very well liked, while Glenn Close is thought to be a bitch"... and, no way they were going to give Gaga an award on her first try.
When my oldest son turned 10, we took him, his 8 year old brother, and about 8-9 of their school friends to see Titanic. When they got to the full boob, painting scene, those kids all had their eyes wide open and their tongues hanging out! In the car-sex scene, when Kate Winslet hand goes scraping down the fogged windows, my 8 year old... very loudly... asked me, "Did he kill her?" I whispered back, "Not in real life, son".
We've come a long way from the days when my Mom covered my eyes at the drive-in so I wouldn't see Elizabeth Taylor in her sheer nightie in Cleopatra. I'm pretty sure I was wearing footy pajamas in the back seat of our car.

Yeah, our parents took us to the drive-in to see A Shot in the Dark which was a Pink Panther movie. I recall a scene where Peter Sellers, Elke Sommers or someone in the movie was nude but was holding a guitar to block the personal parts and our mom told us all to close our eyes.
BTW, what did you think of Rami Malek winning Best Actor for Freddie Mercury? I thought he was outstanding and as a big fan of Queen was really happy to see him win. You're right about Gaga - they gave her the song award but no way she was going to get Best Actress. I didn't see the Melissa McCarthy or Glenn Close movies so I can't comment on those performances. I did see The Favourite, A Star is Born and Roma and Olivia Colman was the best of the 3.

She CARRIED the movie.
I was happy for Malek. He was phenomenal in that movie. Sunday night, our PBS channel ran one of their fundraiser shows. It was a Queen documentary. In it, they showed extensive footage of Queen's 1977 concert at The Summit, it Houston. I was AT that concert. It was really weird to see. I vaguely remember them talking about recording the show... but, had completely forgotten.

We had floor seats, about 3/4 of the way back from the stage... we were RIGHT beside the setup for controlling the sound. I remember spending a lot of time just watching the guys controlling the sound and lights.

No, I'm pretty sure that was the News of the World tour - the first one I saw was A Day at the Races tour. We actually saw Queen in Cleveland the Sunday following Thanksgiving - also in 1977. News of the World came out in the fall of 1977 so that makes sense. Break.....
What the hell, I looked it up. Queen played in Cleveland on November 27 and in Houston at The Summit on December 11 - we saw them 2 weeks apart.

Lol.
Yea. It was the News of the World Tour.
They were in Houston earlier that year, but not at the Summit. It was the smaller Sam Houston coliseum. I had some friends that went to that show, but I didn’t.
