LSU
they have the pieces in place to make a serious run at the playoffs and possibly knocking off one of the big 2. Their 10-3 season last year included a throttling of Georgia, and the Aggies, Tigers, and Gators all come to Baton Rouge
If the offense can take off, especially the passing game, they are the one team that might match up well talentwise
the early test against Texas is a must win to ignite the season
I also like Auburn and Oregon. Auburn has to prove they have a legit QB, and Oregon has to prove they can compete nationally. Amazing that these two teams meet the first week
Don't be fooled by:
Georgia- Georgia has an easy cheese schedule until the end. They will be undefeated until late in the season but don't be fooled...Fromm is great, but this team often loses to the SEC big dogs
Michigan - they have the team to win the Big 10, but they don't match up well with Clemson or Bama. You can't out physical these teams, and the Harbaugh conservative defensive strategy won't work
Oklahoma - I expect them to blaze through their schedule, but do they have the athletes on D or the passing game to hang with Clemson or Bama? Jalen Hurts has got to pass to win

I think LSU is going to have hard time in Austin. It's going to be a WILD crowd that night. Don't have too much data yet on Hermann, but... so far, he seems to be a pretty good big game coach. With the entire off-season to get prepared for THIS game, I think the Tigers will see our best.

Coach O did a good job last year of getting all he could out of the team.

Coach O did a good job last year of getting all he could out of the team. And, he was hilarious in the process.
His personality seems PERFECT for an LSU football team.

Next closest team is Oklahoma with 12. The only team that has beaten either Clemson or Alabama in the playoff was Ohio State. Sure they have a new QB but then again tOSU has had a different starting QB 4 of 5 years of the mCFP.
ttun needs to prove they can actually win the GAME. As of late they have been marginally competitive. Considering they lost the core of the defensive coaching staff and some key departure, I expect they will take a step back.
I would give Texas an honorable mention. I think they have a coach and QB that can take them places.
Regarding LSU, they should have a much better passing game with the personnel they have. Is it a coaching issue??? O has recruited well but I don't see him taking that team to the promise land.
ND may sneak into the playoffs again but I don't see them as being a threat.
Georgia seems to have all of the pieces but still has that chip on their shoulders.
Contender wise I would go with
1 and 1A UGA and Ohio State 3 Oklahoma
The rest of the teams need to show me some more until I add them to the contenders list.

My groupings for "contenders" Group 1: Alabama - Like Clemson, loaded with O, but maybe some minor questions on D. Until somebody actually knocks them off the top of the SEC mountain - Bama it is...Saban trying to get SEC teams to mandate 10 P5 schools on the schedule each year. He's for it, all other SEC coaches - meh. WHy, Saban knows he will still win 95% of those games, while the other teams in the SEC may not. Clemson - The Tigers shocked the media by beating the "best team of all time" by 4 TDs in January. Absolutely loaded on O, the Tigers will have to replace an historically good D Line. Coaches high on FR WR Ngata - Speed of Sammy Watkins, hands of Renfrow. Get's behind the defenses quickly llike Marquise Brown )OK). One coach said he is better than Higgins or Ross right now GEorgia - If there is a team that WANTS to beat Bama in the SEC, it's UGA. Smart has them very close. OKLA - one of the best young coaches in the game. Is Hurts going to transition from game manager to running a high speed, pass-happy offense without skipping a beat? Maybe. Given OK's D giving up lots of points in recent memory, can this O score enough to get enough wins and make it to the CFP? tOSU - absolutely loaded team on O and D. Missed 3 of 4 CFPs since winning it, but always within 3 spots of the field. Another team with potential QB issues? Haskins to Fields may not be completely seamless. Day takes over a program with a peaking trajectory. Group 2: LSU - Still not all warm and fuzzy on LSU right now. could reach 11-1 with a loss to Bama and run the table elsewhere...I see 10-2 / 9-3 here. Texas - the time is right for Texas to strike. Maybe not a natty, but CFP within reach I think. TX v. LSU is a pivotal game for both team to build some CFP capital, especially if either team ends up a 1-loss team. Michigan - Harbaugh's seat is getting warm for one reason - failure to beat tOSU. tOSU@ Ann Arbor, he better get it done this year! ND - was 2018 a fluke? Road trips to UGA and Mich we'll find out. Group 3 Utah Oregon Washington aTm

I pretty much agree with all of that Tiger. I think the change (stability) in coaching will actually HELP the Buckeyes... and, I'm pretty sure than ANY new QB will be better than Haskins. I think Haskins hurt OSU last year. He was TOO conservative. Maybe that was the fault of over-coaching. But, what were seeing of Dwayne in the pro's so far is.. He's just NOT that good.
For right now, Bama and Clemson have CF in a headlock, and I don't see them letting go. Not this year, anyway. Everyone else is just playing for a CFP spot.
Smart has certainly recruited well, and has been a whisker away. Very possible the oblong ball bounces differently for them this year, and they get over the hump. I do still think Utah has a legitimate change to run the table this year. If so, they probably make the dance.
I think OU will NOT do as well as projected this year. Hurts is NO Kyler Murray or Baker Mayfield. Their offense will be MUCH worse.. and, NO ONE wins the Big 12 with defense.
And TEXAS?? sigh..... I SO WANT TO BELIEVE. but.... We've just been SO INCONSISTENT for so long now, it's hard even to convince myself. I think we just don't have the same level of talent as teams like Bama and Clemson... even UGA. I know we beat them in the Sugar Bowl, but... it was the kind of show I've seen many times before. One team was THRILLED to be there, to have chance to "prove" themselves. The other team was despondent that they weren't playing in the CFP. I'm happy we were able to pull off the big win. I wouldn't have wanted to play them 4 more times, or have played in the regular season.
I've lost enough weight in the past 2 months (eating low carbs) to be able to wear ALL my Longhorn gear now. I'll have it ALL on and my flag up when we play LSU. We'll see where things go after that.

Man, I would have loved to see him less conservative - 50 TD passes, 5000 yards passing, a trip to NYC and he broke just about every Big Ten passing record in the process. Damn conservatism😉! I do feel Haskins’ lack of rushing skills hurt the offense - Barrett was a threat to run every play and defenses had to account for him. Last year they keyed on Dobbins and Weber which obviously aided the passing game. I think Haskins will do fine in the NFL - he needs a line and the game to slow down. And yes, everyone is chasing Clemson and Alabama - they are the standard.

Wow... Haskins had 50 TD's?? Ok... I retract that.
Just seemed to me, the times that I watched, that he was throwing a LOT of short junk. He did pad those stats against TTUN! ;-) .
So... I guess, we're not back to: The Buckeyes will be HURT by the loss of Haskins.

He had a few plays where he’d throw a wide out screen or shovel pass to Parris Campbell and he’d take it 50+ yards , Parris had speed to burn. But if Fields can come remotely close to what Haskins did while providing a running threat, it should be a banner year. If’s A big word!

He had a great senior year - I don’t think he’ll be like Michael Thomas but he should have a solid career playing with Andrew Luck.

This thread is about possibilities of teams that can challenge Bama and Clemson of course Ohio State will be good this season. Can they go toe to toe with Bama or Clemson?

I see only LSU has having serious pieces and talent to MAYBE...MAYBE be able to compete toe-to-toe. Alabama owns LSU since 2011 though I think the odds of Bama-Clemson V are pretty high
