For a few years, now, I have had a fear that the "sports bubble" is bursting... younger kids don't follow them the way we did. E-Sports are rising, and soccer.
The financial crash in 2008 forced a lot of companies to scale back on sports advertising. Tax law changes have negatively affected the cost of entertaining at sporting events, or donating to schools.
Meanwhile, there's been a SPENDING BOOM on new stadiums, and coaches salaries, etc which has driven up the cost of being a fan.
The two macro forces are diametrically opposed, and... at some point? One has to win.

I suspect the declining attendance numbers are due, partly, to the increase in FBS teams jumping from FCS with their typical smaller stadiums and crowds. But TV game glut is an obvious factor.
