Ohio State 2019 at #20!!
Are these ratings measuring the strength of the team? Or more the accomplishments of that season?

Mr Howell knows what 'all time' actually means.
JH have you looked at 1909 Yale ?
......10-0 with ten shutouts, 209-0 combined score
05 team was 10-0 with 227-4 combined score
Anyway, perhaps the two most dominant CF teams of all time, IMO.

I don't know Howell's methodology either. Bevo, I thought you were complaining about inclusion of vintage teams. If not so, than apologies.

If not so, than apologies. 1905 Chicago Maroons beat Wabash, which in turn beat Sheriden High School 80-0 www.newspapers.com/clip/12299386/avalanche_strikes_sheridan/I can just picture college kids beating the snot out of a high school squad 1905 is a vastly different world of college football than today's game, and trying to put these teams on an all-time list alongside Clemson 2018 or LSU 2019 is pushing the boundaries of absurdity Maybe recreating the list solely for FBS teams would make better sense

Most all of them played assorted clubs, HSs, military units etc. I was always impressed by Clemson's 10-0 domination of the Charlotte YMCA 8 years earlier. Chicago also dominated the B10 ( Called the Western Conference in that day)I think they outscored their opponents 271-5. Howell knows stuff that casual CF fans do not.I bet your all time MLB team would be from the last 25 years, because it would be absurd to include anyone who played in the early 20th century...right ?

Most people look at NFL history and start with Super Bowl Champs, even though Cleveland and Detroit had championships before that. So it is with college football and the AP Poll in 1936, and even a lot of those Championships are suspect As much as you rag on college football for being mythical, it becomes more and more mythical the further you go back. Shame on Wabash for beating up high school kids to prove dominance. Shame!

The Super Bowl era represents 51 % of Pro Football history... no more no less. Sure agree about the mythicalness of CF history. That's why there have been about 500 assorted voted national champs in only 150 years of the sport. It's still somewhat mythical in that a 'voted' final four can only yield a 'voted' final two which can only yield a 'voted' champion...but I guess it's still better than all that retro ranking of the late 19th century. CF history like all sports history is definitely fun isn't it ? I wish Ken Burns would do a 'Football' documentary film like the great 'Baseball' project. I think Wabash only played with 10 back up players and gave the HS team 6 downs per possession ... a low cost, no travel practice.

I can’t think of anything dumber than trying to compare football teams that played 120+ years apart.

I can’t think of anything dumber than trying to compare football teams that played 120+ years apart. 10000% correct, but folks have fun with it.
For sports time traveling and comparing I was thinking maybe 2019 LSU and 1909 Yale could meet halfway in time which would be playing a game in 1964.
None of the LSU players were even born so those unborn kids would be a pushover
The Yale players would be 75-77 years old and those still alive in 1964 would probably dominate the LSU non existent kids although it might take the old farts about 5 minutes to hobble 100 yards. The Yale RB maybe could , with the help of a cane, walk into the end zone once a quarter and someone else hobble in for the 2 Pt conversion . Its unlikely anyone could kick a PAT.
Therefore , on a perfect chronologically NEUTRAL field 1909 Yale beats 2019 LSU 28-0
