Just to illustrate how much college football has changed, and how the massive SEC bullhorn influences perception...just imagine if we had Paul Finebaum, the committee, etc. etc., the ESPN SEC media machine back in 2002
Does 2002 Ohio State still get in to play Miami?
Georgia was a 12-1 SEC Champion. The SEC/ESPN/Committee would be analyzing ALL of Ohio State's weaknesses. Weak offense, Weak QB in Craig Krenzel, Weak schedule
With no BCS ranking, the committee would look at how juggernaut Georgia destroyed Arkansas 30-3 in the SEC Championship. How could anyone leave out the Bulldogs, they played in the strongest conference. They would be a -14.5 favorite against Ohio State!
Ohio State had ugly wins against Cincinnati and Purdue. They had to beat 5-7 Illinois in overtime.
Clearly, Miami FL and Georgia were the two best teams, right? right?
But of course, the ESPN SEC love affair had not bloomed quite yet, and a more extensive set of rankings put in the undefeated teams instead of useless suit dweebs in a backroom saying who is best. History took its course and the Buckeyes, despite winning ugly throughout the year, got to prove themselves on the field and managed to pull off an amazing upset.

So your saying Ohio State didn't deserve to play in that game?

Is this a result of ESPN propaganda? Or the SEC dominating at the highest level for 20 years?

2002 SEC isn't in the same ball park as 2023 SEC , they hadnt developed the pedigree yet.

The SEC is not that dominant. It is a conference of 2 super teams and the rest are either good or bad. Either Alabama or Georgia is going to win the SEC. Every now and then an LSU may show up, but the other SEC teams are always losing to the top 2. But since ESPN owns the SEC and the CFP, they will make sure an SEC team, or 2 will be in the CFP

In the BCS/CFP period, they have absolutely dominated the format. They have won the Title 13 of the past 17 years, with FIVE different teams winning. If that’s not “dominance”, I don’t understand what the word means. It doesn’t mean they win every game. It does mean it’s hard to succeed there. A few years ago, when Kentucky was trying to improve, they had the 7th highest ranked recruiting class in the nation . It was the 6th highest in the SEC. That’s tough.

Yes, Texas A&M had the highest recruiting class in 22 and Appalachian beat them at home. Auburn lost badly to N. Mexico St. (at home) and nearly beat the SEC champ. UGA barely beat Ga. Tech. And everybody is scared to play Vandy
And that is what makes them tough? Recruits? NFL players? Not results on the field? SEC had a losing record to P5 schools this year and to the ACC. And as for the 13 title, the majority have been by Alabama. 1 school.

Maybe, the NIL money is making other places more viable for top athletes? But, talent-wise, the SEC is still on top. Bama may have the majority, but not all.... NO OTHER conference has more than 1 who has won.

In the 17 year span you stated, the ACC has had 2 different teams to win Clemson (2016, 2018) and Florida State (2013)

No, I am saying the ESPN propaganda machine would have rallied around Georgia to try and get them in over Ohio State I guess I am the only one who can remember ESPNs worship of USC or when they said Ohio State could not be stopped from winning three NCs in a row after they beat BAMA. ESPN is the ultimate bandwagon fan and will change at the drop of a hat and have done so repeatedly.

I was going to chime in the same thing - I seem to recall everyone saying 2 loss USC was the better team to play Miami even though they lost to Kansas State and Washington State (a team Ohio State pounded). Carson Palmer was the Heisman winner that season.

Hen may need to update his easiest conference to win numbers.
