At least wait 4 weeks to put out the first rankings. First of all college football teams change every year to alarming degrees. Last years champ could go 6-6 and an 8-5 also ran could be this years best team.
This is years rankings had FIVE SEC teams in them based on NOTHING but ESPN hype. Only one ( Auburn) is still ranked after three weeks, and they will lose 2-4 more this year.
Quit ranking on reputation, release the first rankings after 4-5 weeks when you have a little sample size to go on. It will encourage teams to play decent OOC competition to give themselves a chance at a high ranking and maybe some of those teams that only play OOC at home against FCS sub teams would actually travel.
Just a thought.

I agree with you about not wanting to see rankings until Week 5. But don't think it would change anyone's scheduling.
Teams schedule to try to get the best resume for them to get to the playoff. I don't think rankings affect the at all.
the rankings aren't going anywhere though. They're useful for marketing purposes.
Oh...and welcome to the board. Were you on the old board?

In the playoff era, they are mostly amusement. The fans have something to argue about.
Welcome to the board.

With the CFP and their committee now, I'm not sure why folks even care or pay attention to the polls? Like in college hoops, they are purely for entertainment for those who care.

There still could be some influence on some committee people by these goofy polls.

Possibly. MLB is getting ready to start its post season championship........without any goofy 'selection committee', polls, computers...nothing mythical whatsoever needed.

Not all that difficult to do in a league that only has 30 teams, and can play games every day... TWICE a day, if needed. And with NO concerns about school, testing, holidays... etc...
College football is a little more complicated
MLB just totally sucks at running the regular season... it's WAYYYYY too long.

MLB has 6 division champs. FBS football has 10. It wouldn't be that difficult to remove the mythical element from big time CF. The Cartel doesn't want to...bottom line. The NFL has 8 division champs, FBS has 10....again every sport can do it except the exhibition/mythical subdivision of NCAA football. 'Greed' , imo, is the reason the Cartel wants a mythical post season. The # of teams in FBS is a ZERO excuse. Look at the number of teams in FSC, D2 and D3 and they can have real championships. No, Bevo, the only complication is 'greed'.

We'll simply never agree on this Hen.
For starters, there AREN'T 10 equal Division champs in FBS... Not even close.
And, again... I do NOT accept the FSC, D2, D3 playoffs as great examples of how wonderful football playoffs could be. They stink, in many ways.
There are BUNCH of complications in the arrangements for the FBS ... including, existing contracts and practices that cover MILLIONS of dollars. So, yea.. I'll agree that greed (if that's how you want to describe it) is a factor. It's NOT a factor that the lower Divisions have to worry about. But, it's not the only factor. There are many. Comparing it a sport like the MLB is simply ridiculous.

Can a team from Japan play in the World Series? No, of course not, that would be ridiculous. Yet it is all professional baseball.
Some professional baseball teams are excluded for obvious reasons.

Just a thought. This is backwards thinking. Preseason rankings are fine. The problem is that polls decide the championship.
