I haven't seen all the movies but will wrap things up by Sunday night. Here's who I think will win - some based on trends, others based on what I've seen so far....
Picture - 1917, seeing it tomorrow. It's done well in most of the other award shows. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood appears to be it's biggest competition.
Actor - Joaquin Phoenix/Joker - He'll become the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the Joker. There has only been one other role that has seen 2 actors win Oscars for it's portrayal - it happened almost 50 years ago, 2 years apart.
Actress - Rene Zellwegger/Judy - Watched this on the plane coming home from Florida on Tuesday. Not the best movie but Zellwegger does nail Garlands mannerisms. I like Saorise Ronan but she'll have to wait for another day. Zellwegger wins in a big comeback in a movie about a Hollywood legend.
Supporting Actor - Brad Pitt/Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. A lifetime achievement award for Brad.
Suppotring Actress - Laura Dern/A Marriage Story. I hated her character but I guess that's the point. I'd pick Margo Robbie because she's pretty damn, hot and I actually thought she was better.
Director - Sam Mendes/1917. Best Picture and Director generally go hand in hand. I think it will this year.
Adapted Screenplay - Greta Gerwig/Little Women. There was a lot of grumbling that she didn't get a nod for Best Director; maybe this will be her consolation.
Original Screenplay - Quentin Tarrantino/Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He seems to win everytime he's nominated for this category.
Animated Feature - Klaus. I didn't see this but my kids tell me it was cute. I don't think they'll give it to a sequel.
Cinematography - 1917
Costume Design - Little Women
Documentary Feature - American Factory. I saw this and it's set in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Got to root for the hometown filmmakers!
Documentary Short - Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone. Just s guess here, haven't seen any of these films.
Film Editing - Ford vs Ferrari. Tremendous racing scenes.
International Feature Film - Parasite. It's nominated for Best Picture, the others don't have a chance.
Musical Score - Joker. Haunting soundtrack.
Original Song - Rocketman, I'm Gonna Love Me Again. Elton John get's an Oscar.
Production Design - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Make-up and Hairstyling - Bombshell. They made Charlize Theron look like Megyn Kelly!
Visual Effects - 1917. They sweep the technical awards.
Sound Editing - 1917.
Sound Mixing - 1917.
I didn't even attempt to predict animated and documentary shorts - I have no clue.
