The first wave of the 1918 pandemic occurred in the spring and was generally mild. The sick, who experienced such typical flu symptoms as chills, fever and fatigue, usually recovered after several days, and the number of reported deaths was low."
That said there is a danger in citing low death totals and saying this isnt dangerous. The Spanish Influenza in 1918 started out with a whimper and left with a bang....until this thing is contained, unfortunately I'd rather them do to much than not do enough. I'd rather look back and say society overreacted than look back and say what else could we have done? As long as we can get to stay reasonably calm that will determine how smoothly or badly this thing goes.

crap.. would we REALLY be THAT worse off if these basketball teams played each other? this is the WORST March EVER. weird shit going on... I feel like the herd mentality became cancel the tourney and the NCAA went along with it At this point, the closings are nothing more that protection from litigation. Everyone is afraid of getting sued. The BEST thing our Feckless Congress could do would be: Pass a law banning lawsuits against institutions hosting VOLUNTARILY attended large gatherings.

More people are going to be affected by the FINANCIAL damage of this response than the medical impact of this nasty cold. At one point, I suspected this was a virus engineered by the Chinese to safely reduce their elderly population. I don't believe that now. Why? Because it's been so totally ineffective. Even in China, the epicenter of this "crisis", only ~ 3100 people have died. Hell man, that's less than one city block in most Chinese cities. This is the stupidest mass hysteria I have seen since the Pet Rock craze.

this is clearly a virus unluck any other Aren't they all? Pretty much all corona viruses are highly contagious. Most of them aren't nearly as damaging as this one. At least, to older people. No one, anywhere, under the age of 30 has died. No one, outside of China under the age of 50 has died. This virus is real. Canceling everything, IMO, is a bit of an over-reaction. But, whatever.... #coronavacation is trending. To me, this one is very different because people can be a carrier of this virus for many days without showing any symptoms. If this virus would get into the assisted living home that my parents live in then it would likely take out the majority of the residence. I don't see any issue playing the tournaments with no fans in the stands but it is what it is. One thing for sure is that 2 month from now the media will say we either over reacted or under reacted but until that time comes no one knows for sure.

One thing for sure is that 2 month from now the media will say we either over reacted or under reacted but until that time comes no one knows for sure. For sure, nursing homes and elderly care facilities need to be on strict lock down. Their residents are truly threatened. We should be doing EVERYTHING possible to make sure anyone coming in or out are tested, and kept away if exposed. I agree with you: It should be fine to hold these sporting events, just without the hordes of fans. The players are NOT at risk. The purpose of thinning the crowds is simply to slow the spread. What frustrates me to no end is, Our society's complete lack of ability to understand, or deal with virtually ANY issue that encompasses "risk management". Everyone gravitates to one side or the other (It's catastrophic, or it's a hoax). Sensibility flies out the window. It isn't helped at all by our media, that purposely HYPES everything, to get clicks and eyeballs. Yesterday, I watched Fauci's press conference. He was drawn into a discussion of the way testing is being done. He was making the case (unartfully) that the overly regulated protocol for testing was a "system failing".... He didn't say, "Our health system is failing". What are the headlines on Drudge today? 'SYSTEM FAILING", and "CDC ONLY TESTS 77 PEOPLE!!!" After a CHANGE in regulation pushed by Trump 10 days ago, testing is now being allowed in private labs and hospitals. They are now doing THOUSANDS and more are coming. It's actually GOOD NEWS that the CDC is not doing very many anymore. And yet, people get panicked by FAKE headlines.

anyone remember how many cases and deaths we had with the Swine Flu (H1N1) in 2009 when Obama finally issued a National Emergency declaration? Don't you remember how we shut down the NBA and March Madness, and the Masters? What dark days those were.

So in Ohio only 5 positive tests thus far and that hasn't changed. I did go out on the internet and saw one site that claims that probably 1% of Ohio is affected which is roughly 100,000 people. I don't buy that for a minute as I don't see many reports of people claiming they are sick.
All schools in Ohio have been ordered to shut down and go online if possible for the next 3 weeks. WVU where my son goes has gone completely on line and will be moving back home with his girl friend for the unforeseen future My Company has ordered everyone to work from home for an indefinite period
The homestead is going to be lively in the upcoming weeks.

If this virus would get into the assisted living home that my parents live in then it would likely take out the majority of the residence. I don't see any issue playing the tournaments with no fans in the stands but it is what it is. My brother in law suffered a catastrophic heart stoppage on May 3rd last year. He's spent the last 8 months in a nursing facility and I have doubts that he'll ever get out and go home. He is confined to a wheel chair, can't walk, use his arms, feed himself, go to the bathroom. His wife (my wife's sister) goes and spends considerable time every day with him. We have a schedule of people for 2 hour blocks so he's rarely alone. He recognizes people but I'm not sure what his comprehension level is - I kind of hope its pretty low otherwise he has to be absolutely miserable. He's had some bouts with pneumonia and other respiratory issues. He'll be 61 in April.
Yesterday his family was told no visitors until further notice, they're heartbroken but they understand. My wife's sister went to the the facility today, they wheeled him up to the window and she stood outside so he could see her. Heartbreaking. I just hope nothing happens to him during this quarantine - just a hopeless feeling.
Early on they were told he'd never get any better than having to be institutionalized. At one point they trached him and put him on a ventilator or he may have passed. They wanted to give him a chance. Now I'm afraid the doctors prognosis is going to play out. He had a living will but they went against his wishes with the ventilator. You wonder how many other stories like this are playing out across the country. My wife tells me on a pretty regular basis if anything like this ever happens to her to let her go - she doesn't want to live like that and I know my brother in law feels the same way. They just wanted to give him a chance.

So you're telling me Ohio is going to have more infections than all of China are you kidding me? I have a healthy respect for this virus in the sense of I don't want to get this, because there are always exceptions to every rule and I don't know how it would effect me and I dont want to carry it to someone more vulnerable. HOWEVER putting out an 100,000 person estimate for Ohio SEEMS assasine when a country of 1.4 billion has yet to receive 100,000 confirmed cases. Theres alot of fear mongering being mixed with the facts as we learn more about this, which is also causing people to panic

I put the tv on ESPN this morning, just to see what they would be showing ? Keith Olbermann was talking. I mean, really? They let that idiot come back? Who knew?
I decided to listen to see how long it would take for him to say something stupid. It didn’t take long.
The black guy host (?? No idea who it was) asked how this compared to 9/11.
Olbermann’s response? “Back then, we knew it would only be a week or two. Now, we have to wonder whether baseball will EVER be played again ?”
Ever? That’s it folks, it’s the END of the world.
Might as well head over to World if Beer. Boy, did I pick a bad year to give up alcohol for Lent!!

And I heard we have permission to skip mass the next 3 weeks. The sign of peace will be interesting with everyone bumping elbows - not sure I want to take communion!

Best new I have gotten in a while. Thanks Doc for granting the release!!!
Olberman was an idiot then and I am sure he stayed true to form. He is an arrogant SOB and has this attitude that he is smarter than the rest of us so we should all listen to him???

I'm no medical expert, and I've never lived through a "pandemic"
But I imagine 3 key stats would be: -Mortality rate -Recovery rate -Hospital capacity
So far these three stats are practically non-existant factors...so what does that tell you about this demon virus?

Just read an article about a 45 year old attorney in New Orleans who's "never been sick", who is now on a ventilator in the hospital. THAT, is starting to scare me. Also, the mortality rate in Italy (just based on published data) is 6.8%. Ok.... Now, I'm starting to worry...
