Keep in mind from the fall of 1972 thru May of '76 I attended a predominantly black, inner city high school. I often refer to those days as the 4 years I was black. So my list of songs may not be what you'd expect from a 61 year old white man but they're the songs I listened to then and still do to this day...
Songs that just missed the cut; September - Earth, Wind and Fire, For the Love of Money - The O'Jays, Badlands - Bruce Springsteen, Dancing Queen - ABBA, O-o-h Child - The Five Stairsteps, Heroes - David Bowie, Superstition - Stevie Wonder.
10. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John. Opening songs from the Goodbye, Yellowbrick Road album. Saw Elton do this in concert and it was phenomenal. 'The roses in the window box are tilted to one side...'
9. New Kid in Town - The Eagles. Greatest song ever about how fleeting fame is. 'They will never forget you till somebody new comes along...'
8. Celebrate Me Home - Kenny Loggins. Song came out my junior year at Ohio State and always makes me think about my family and all the holidays we spent together. 'Home for the holidays, I believe I've missed each and every face...'
7. Living For the City - Stevie Wonder. It's got to be the 7+ minute version but this is one of the most powerful songs about society ever written. 'His parents give him love and affection, to keep him strong moving in the right direction...'
6. Heart of Glass - Blondie. If you mixed pop, disco, new wave and punk in a blender and put it on high this song would be the result. 'Once I had a love and it was a gas, soon turned out be a pain in the ass...'
5. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen. I never realized this was Freddie's 'coming out' song but it was so different and you couldn't hear it enough back when it first came out in 1975...still to this day. 'Nothing really matters, anyone can see....'
4. What's Going On? - Marvin Gaye. Ironic that a guy who sang one of the greatest songs about the quest for peace was shot and killed by his father. 'War is not the answer, for only love can conquer hate...'
3. Love's in Need of Love Today - Stevie Wonder. First song on his Songs in the Key of Life album. Stevie's song about love needing love is more relevant today than it was in 1976. 'The force of evil plans to make you it's possession and it will if we let it destroy everybody...'
2. Imagine - John Lennon. I think by now you've figured out I'm pretty much a pacifist at heart. 'You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...'
1. Let it Be - The Beatles. The Beatles have been a huge part of my life for over 55 years and this is my favorite song by them. I recall moments of my life based on when I first heard certain Beatles songs. 'And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me, shine on till tomorrow....'
