Top movies from 1920's - 1959...
This is a tough list - I love the old movies before there was technology and all the computer generated effects - just a great story with legendary performances. It's difficult to narrow it down to 10 so I'll list 20. I'll say I haven't seen Ben-Hur all the way through and while I just watched Citizen Kane again I don't get how it's considered the greatest movie of all time. I know a lot of accolades have to deal with camera shots and how the music was integrated into the film but I didn't think it was any better than any of the movies I'm listing below. My top 5 is pretty set but after that they're interchangeable...if you haven't seen any of these movies check TCM which is where I saw most of them - they're worth the 2 hour investment...
1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - Jimmy Stewart finds out what life would be like if he hadn't been born. i watch it every year on Festivus - December 23.
2. The Wizard of Oz (1939) - I've seen this movie more than any other. Also boasts the greatest song from a movie, Over the Rainbow.
3. Casablanca (1943) - This movie gets better with every scene.
4. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) - 1939 was an amazing year for movie's. Wish all senators were like Jefferson Smith but I guess they only happen in the movies.
5. Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) - One of the great endings in any movie, ever. Prisoners build a bridge for the enemy Japanese in WWII.
6. On the Waterfront (1954) - Marlon Brando takes on corruption in the Philadelphia longshoreman's union.
7. Gone With the Wind (1939) - Scarlett O'Hara lies, steals, cheats and kills to take care of her family and her beloved home, Tara, during and after the Civil War.
8. Singin' in the Rain (1952) - The musical by which all other musicals should be measured against.
9. All About Eve (1950) - Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night.
10. Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944) - This is one the Duck recommended. Star's Betty Hutton and Eddie Bracken. About a young girl who gets 'in trouble' following a USO dance and the poor schlepp who wants to save her reputation.
11. Pride of the Yankees (1942) - The Lou Gehrig story. If you're missing baseball right now this is a great movie to watch.
12. Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) - Driven by their desperate economic plight, two young men join an old-timer in Mexico to prospect for gold - then greed takes over.
13. Some Like it Hot (1959) - two musicians from the days of prohibition and gangsters join an all female band (as women) after witnessing the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Marilyn Monroe and Joe E. Brown become their love interests.
14. Mr. Roberts (1955) - Life on a supply freighter during WWII.
15. The Maltese Falcon (1941) - Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade pursuing a priceless statue along with several other questionable characters.
16. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - The first full length animated feature.
17. Sergeant York (1941) - country bumpkin Alvin York becomes a national hero in WWI.
18. The Awful Truth (1937) - A couple decides to divorce and then goes to great lengths to sabotage their exes attempts to remarry.
19. Roman Holiday (1953) - A princess runs away from her duties and finds love with a journalist in Rome.
20. North by Northwest (1959) - This would have been a lot higher had it not been for the ending - I'll just leave it at that. My favorite Hitchcock movie but that ending!!
