Somehow I started digging into the 2012 season, and it's amazing how many teams missed an opportunity to win a National Championship.
Notre Dame was a sitting duck, undefeated and highly overrated. Maybe they would have played better in the BCS Championship against another foe besides Alabama......maybe
Oregon had looked stunning all season, but got taken down by a field goal to Stanford. 2012 could have finally been the year the Ducks claimed a championship.
Kansas State cruised through their schedule, beating Miami, TCU, and Oklahoma until they got stunned by the Big 12 bastard team, Baylor. How many seasons has Baylor ruined for teams!? Beat Baylor, and they'd have a shot at a full-of-hot-air Irish squad
Georgia had the golden opportunity...Aaron Murray had Georgia at the Alabama 6 or 7 with mere seconds left in the SEC Championship Game. A touchdown there sends Georgia to their first National Championship in ages and probably wins a crystal ball for the Bulldawgs, the only SEC power that has not won a championship in the BCS-Playoff era.
And then you had undefeated but inelligible Ohio State sitting at 12-0. The Buckeyes would have stomped the Irish.
Florida had 1 loss at the end. A 17-9 loss to Georgia.
It was a year for something different...an opportunity for someone new to bring home a championship
But everyone fell flat, nobody claimed their ticket to the dance....except for 1-loss Alabama, and they kicked the crap out of the overhyped Irish defense.
It was a "what could have been" season though, for many teams

And there was a significant window between Notre Dame and 1-loss Alabama for an undefeated team to slip in and claim a championsip.

FSU had a really good team, but had dropped a couple
Even Louisville had a good team that year, but had a flubbed a couple games at the end that they should have won
