Ok… no. It wasn't me. It was Rush Limbaugh.
But, as I always tell everyone who asked me, "You like Rush Limbaugh??"
I respond, " I AM Rush Limbaugh, just better looking and without the money".
I've been a fan of Rush since August of 1989. I remember how it happened, the way older people remember the Kennedy assassinations. I was at a work party. The wife and I were invited to a country club celebration of the successful (FINALLY) startup of the Sodium Cyanide plant in Texas City, Tx I'd been working on for nearly 2 years. At that party, as I was holding a drink and talking with a couple of co-workers, one guy.... an electrical engineer who played trombone in the Houston Symphony, started going on and on about some IDIOT he'd heard on the radio that week. I liked this engineer. He was funny. I used to give him crap about playing the trombone in the symphony. Have you ever watched them? They sit on stage for 90 minutes, and usually play for about 2 minutes. It's the easiest job in the world, and because they're unionized, he gets FULL pay. Anyway, he was a nice guy, but a raging liberal, politically. I knew that. So, anybody on the radio that he hates, I'm probably going to like.
The next day, at lunch... I went to my car and tuned my radio to AM 700, KSEV. It was a new station run by the guy who is now the Lt. Governor of Texas. All I heard was Andy Williams singing "Born Free", and a bunch of weird sounds like chain saws, and someone yelling "Timber!!!". Then, Rush started talking. It was an 'environmental update'. It was something about untold millions of dollars California was going to spend digging tunnels under some empty rural roads for endangered turtles to crawl under. Rush's take was: It would be a LOT cheaper to pay illegals to stand by the roads and just CARRY the turtles across. I cracked up laughing... and, I haven't stopped listening since.
When I worked in Louisiana, there was a BBQ place called Montana's that had a 'Rush Room' at lunchtime. They played him, loudly, over the radio in that room of the restaurant. I ate a lot of BBQ then. I bought both of Rush's books. I've bought (and collected) ALL of his newsletters. And, I've been a member of his 24/7 web service from Day 1. I've called the show and got on the air three times. Almost made it one other time, but they ran out of time.
When I travel overseas, I download the show on my phone, and listen to it as I'm going to bed, or when I wake up WAY too early... or, even during the middle of the night when I can't sleep. It keeps me up to date on what's going on at home while I'm out of the country.
Usually, I listen to the first hour every day at lunch. I listen to the 2nd hour as I'm driving home (when I used to drive to the office) as a download on my phone, and then the third hour sometime in the evening. I rarely ever miss a segment. So, I was listening on the day he announced his lung cancer. I was working from home that day and had him on the background. I wasn't listening that closely, until.. I heard a tone change in his voice. I stopped cold, and started paying attention. It was terrible news. The worst. But, if ANYONE could get through this, it would be Rush.
Then, just a few days later, Trump awards Rush the Medal of Freedom at the State of the Union address. This was, without a doubt, the GREATEST thing I ever saw, politically, in my lifetime. I literally had tears in my eyes. Trump loves theatrics. He's the master of "the show". But, he's also sentimental and he loves Rush.
I get news from many sources. So, yea.. I know that Rush sometimes is wrong. But, it's rare. I know he's not quite as funny as he used to be. But, these aren't funny times anymore. I treasure listening to him and I pray he'll be on the air for many more years. I don't even want to think about the time when he's no longer available.
But, whatever happens... while he was alive, he was given our nation's highest honor, by a President with GIANT brass balls.
And I feel like it was given to me.
Since, I AM Rush.
