Watching the ESPN playoff show this weekend was nauseating....I think ESPN is a horrible influence on college football
The framing of Cincinnati to be lucky is bogus and even their #4 rating is suspect. Somehow the eye test gets thrown out when talking about Cincinnati in favor of SOS, which Cincinnati can't control. They absolutely look like one of the top teams IMO. Cincinnati should have been ahead of Georgia.
But back to ESPN...they have a massive conflict of interest regarding college football. They have a vested interest in promoting the SEC. They are financially invested in this conference. Yet somehow ESPN is heavily tied to the College Football playoff committee and the rankings that produce them. Investing in the SEC and investing in the postseason of a collegiate sport seems to me to be a massive conflict of interest. And so we keep seeing 2 teams from the SEC in the playoff? hmmmmmm, wonder why that is
Think about it...why are no other networks reporting on the rankings of the committee? why isn't the Big 10 network out there reporting? Why are they solely delivered on ESPN?
And the way the rankings are reported are heavily biased.
Here's how they portrayed everything: > Cincinnati was incredibly lucky to be there > Georgia is a foregone conclusion and thinking they shouldn't be there is stupid > debating if a conference championship game loser should even be in the playoff is not up for discussion (at least this year)
It's also very clear the talking pundits for ESPN, most of which are ex-SEC players, are supposed to adhere to the corporate narrative of ESPN.
They also keep referring to the "metrics" of the committee....what effin metrics? can someone cite these metrics? To me, it looks like people go into a back room and pick anything they want; its completely subjective
Why are University Presidents at PAC 12, ACC, and Big 10 schools ok with this? How stupid can you be?
I don't care what playoff we have in the future, ESPN's influence on the sport needs to be diminished...more REPORTING on the sport, and less CONTROLLING the sport. Is it COLLEGE football or ESPN football?

ESPN's FPI also includes recruiting rankings - who does that benefit?

I don’t see any conflict. ESPN is trying to make money and they are promoting what makes them money. Where is the conflict?
Now if ESPN was the governing body of college football, they would have a massive conflict of interest. But they’re not.
ESPN as a company has an obligation to milk college football for all it is worth. They have an obligation to increase commercial timeouts and extend game lengths up until the point that people stop watching and ad revenue decreases.

Where is the conflict? They promote what works best for them.
Joey are Herbie the front men for college football...both from the same school. Corso coached in the B1G.
You are off on this one.
That said, ESPN has value to me for live sports. I used to watch some of their talk shows but the are all pretty much crap.

I think you guys are actually agreeing. A 'for profit' media network can far more influence an invitational bowl event than it could a championship playoff.

I thought I'd bump this post up And of course, the SEC posters on the board..."what? there's no conflict"

LOL You thought Cincy was better than Georgia?? I wouldn't be re-posting that if I'd said that.

LOL You thought Cincy was better than Georgia?? I wouldn't be re-posting that if I'd said that. you're still hung up on "best"
you can't determine "best" without playing the game on the field. Alot of people thought Oregon was "better" than Washington. What was the line for that game again?
Do you remember that Georgia in '21 got absolutely destroyed in the SEC Championship by Alabama?
Do you also remember that Georgia and Cincinnati actually played in 2020, where Georgia needed a last second field goal to beat Cincinnati?
Do you also remember when many people thought Georgia was "better" than Texas in the Sugar Bowl back in '18?
Michigan is #1 right now. Do you think they are the "best" team? Is Washington better than Georgia? or Ohio State?
I'm not sure how someone that watches the NFL so much can't figure out the massive inconsistencies in the college football postseason, especially when you compare both playoffs side by side. One has actual rules that allow "who's best" to be determined on the field, the other has a backroom of people that tell us who is best, an invitational in the guise of a "playoff"

Georgia WAS better than Texas in 2018. That Bowl game was not a reflection of the entire season.
I remember watching Cincy struggle to get two FG’s against Bama. They had no chance of winning that game.
When only 4 teams are allowed in the playoff, someone MUST decide who the “best 4” are… we don’t have time for everyone to “play on the field”.
Cincy got their chance. They couldn’t deliver.

Why exactly did Texas make the playoff again? UT lost to Oklahoma...by far the worst loss of all potential playoff teams, including Georgia, Ohio State, and Oregon
Texas is ranked #5 in the simulated BCS poll.
Also, we were talking Cincinnati vs. Georgia, not Cincinnati vs. Alabama.
And we don't have time to play it on the field?
Apparently we do...12 team playoff comes next year lol

Explain the conflict? Disney is obligated to their shareholders, not to the integrity of college football.

Yes... Texas is BETTER than Bama this year.. at least, as far as we know now. They did actually play, at BAMA's home field... and won by 10 points. OU was not a bad loss. They were highly ranked at the time, it was a 1-score game decided in the last 15 seconds.. And, it was in October, not NOW.. during the playoffs. There is still no time for 132 teams to play it all out on the field. We'll still be "choosing" participants next year.

Who created the four team so called playoff. I said from day one that it was stupid. I always knew this day was coming. ESPN didn't do it, the SEC didn't do it, Alabama didn't do it. How many tears did you shed over the PAC 12 being left out repeatedly? Your team got left out because the entire plan was ill-conceived from the start. Who could have predicted that? I did years ago. I never supported this plan for one second but I do know who to blame and I did on day one of this stupid plan.

I think it was Coca-Cola. It was a long-term plan to ruin Dr. Pepper's brand!
