So this is what it would look like....
1. Clemson vs 16. Arkansas St. 2. Alabama vs 15. San Diego State 3. Michigan State vs 14. Bowling Green 4. Oklahoma vs 13. Western Kentucky 5. Iowa vs 12. Houston 6. Stanford vs 11. TCU 7. Ohio State vs 10. UNC 8. Notre Dame vs 9. FSU
All conferences get a trophy, I think you would see some upsets - Iowa would be in big trouble and WKU would definitely score against Oklahoma. Still think 8 is a better number and anyone below #8 really doesn't have an argument.
The first round might look something like that depending on how the NCAA selection committee ( not the ESPN/Cartel committee) filled the at-large slots and seeded the teams. The drama builds as the 8 survivors meet up in the quarter finals, and continues to build as the 4 survivors play in the semi-finals and then the final two survivors play for it all. ( no mythical , opinionated free 'appointments' to the semi-finals or finals) . The bracketology of a real FBS national championship would be the greatest thing in sports, imo, as teams would be required to actually 'play' and advance their way through a complete playoff field......you know, kind of like how all other team sports championships on Earth work. There would likely be some one sided first round games and some potential shockers as well....that's fun and fairness of it...and the 'sport' of it. A 16 team playoff won't ever happen....unnecessary pipedreaming

Great.... We get an NCAA Champion sometime in February, just so Ark St gets a free roll. No thanks.

The Bowl division would have to change its basic ideology that VOTING is somehow superior to PLAYING for determining a champion.

8-team playoff. Eliminate CCG's and replace them with the quarter-finals that first week of December...all four quarter-finals ON CAMPUS. Then just go into the system we have now. No extra games for anyone.

Why aren't you jumping up and down whining about other NCAA championships, all of which are inclusive?

There is a lot of interest in the NCAA men's basketball championship. I will concede that women's bowling doesn't draw big crowds.

The NCAA had it almost perfect...but, now... they're trying their best to even screw this up. Too many teams now make the tourney. As a result, the regular season literally means nothing. Conference Championships are also practically irrelevant. So much so, many people don't even want to play conference tournaments any more. And, if they do? They prefer to lose, to get more time to prepare for the ONLY thing that matters: The BIG tourney at the end.

Have to agree with Bevo....the NCAA hoops championship is too bloated - way too many 'at large' selections. However, the regular season, including the tourneys, does eliminate about 265 teams....80 % of the field, so it does have some meaning. The big time CF regular season eliminates about 37% of the teams from post season play.

No one has come up with a cogent argument against a 16-team playoff for FBS football. The big fear, it seems, is that a smattering of G5 conference teams will make the field. After seeing how dominant G5 teams have been in BCS and CFP bowls, such fears are actually understandable.
Bevo, for one, wants is to believe that a16-team FBS playoff would extend into February. That is a classic red herring. This hasn't proved to be the case for any of the other NCAA football divisions, which have playoff fields up to 32 teams. A 16-team FBS playoff could be concluded in December.

So far, the vast majority of decision makers agree with me. Virtually no one is clamorimg for a 16 team field... And, I seriously doubt anyone ever will.

Pray tell, please enlighten us. 5 conferences don't need a 16 team playoff to determine the winner. Correct. That is exactly what we have now. The CFP champion is the champion of ... (drum roll) ... the CFP. Pretend all you wish, but the CFP champion is not and can never be the legitimate FBS national champion. Even if the P5 conferences were to structure a 16-team CFP, it wouldn't be for a true FBS national championship. It is hard to blame the P5 conferences. There is much to fear, as the G5 representatives have proved in BCS and CFP bowls.
