Ok... after working 4 hours on Saturday, 6 hours on Sunday.... and then, 14 hours yesterday (including, having to cancel our planned movie night).. AND, having to go to Houston all next week..... I decided, today... that, I needed some time with MamaBevo. Call it, "relationship management". So, we went to lunch, and then to watch "Room".
Just as we were getting out of Room, "13 Hours" was starting... so, why not? We did a double feature. Here are my reviews:
ROOM: I'm still struggling with how to review this movie. My main impression was: It was Haunting.
It's an emotionally gut-wrenching movie. At 1 pm, with NO alcohol... I was fighting tears 3 or 4 times. Doc? Take a BOX of Kleenex. The acting performances were impressive. The kid was exceptional. Brie Larson was also VERY good. I had a few quibbles with the story.... but, I couldn't say anything was impossible. It was an interesting story... VERY unique. As I try to compare this movie to Brooklyn? I think it was better.. Just from being, more interesting. I never knew where it was going. It was definitely different from any movie I've ever seen.... Worth seeing. 4 out of 5 stars. ****
13 Hours: Very good 'war movie'.... heavy on the "soldiers missing home and family".... It does show, in graphic detail, how our Ambassador died. But, I found this movie very disappointing. I was hoping it would really explain what happened there. Well, after watching it? I don't think I know any more than I did before. Granted... I have read two ENTIRE Congressional reports on Benghazi. I THINK I know what happened there... After watching this movie? It's more confusing than ever. Hard to tell who were good guys vs bad guys... I guess, that's how it was for them.
They really stayed away from the political aspect.. which, was disappointing. They NEVER mentioned Hillary, or Sec State at all. Very early in all the events, they flash a picture of the White House and say, "POTUS is about to be briefed". After that? Nothing good happens. So, I guess... the viewer is left to understand: Obama was told, early on, what was happening.. and, NOTHING was done to help these folks. But, I'm sorry.. most people won't make that connection. The movie clearly sets up the CIA on-site chief as the "bad guy". That's who people will come away despising. But, the truth is.. ONLY the President could approve use of our available assets in Libya... Our President WAS INFORMED, early in the event, and.... he did nothing. How many viewers will get that? MamaBevo thinks... almost none. That's depressing to me.
The guy from The Office was VERY good in this movie.. He REALLY bulked up. Other characters were good.. and, the action was compelling. For my taste though, there were "too many Tangos"... and, they wimped out on the reality of what happened. Three out of five stars. ***
Both movies are worth seeing... Room, especially.
