Those majors are closed off to many students because of the difficulty, or needing to work. .... reality is that the demands of being a D1 athlete and the demands of certain majors effectively force students to choose athletics over an education.
I agree... I had a good friend at UT who was in Chemical Engineering and playing as a starter on the baseball team. It was REALLY hard... time wise. He was darn near a genius. From what I saw of the football player's schedules? It would be impossible. Even just trying to schedule the classes, it would literally be impossible.
Also while I was at UT, a QB who sometimes started for them (Mark McBath) QUIT football after his sophomore year, to focus on Chemical Engineering (Or maybe pre-med??? My memory is fuzzy)..... But, the media at the time were SHOCKED. I always though it made sense. He wasn't that good at football.
The UT golf team had ALL of their classes scheduled prior to Noon... so, they could be on the golf course every day by 1 pm. That schedule limits the kind of majors you can choose.

That's one reason why the Josh Dobbs story is so amazing.... 2nd team all SEC QB with an Aerospace Engineering major.
