...wondering how the hell the Falcons lost that game last night.
I'm not sure how someone who gets paid millions of dollars could have just whiffed so bad on rudimentary football strategy....
you run out the clock and you win...It's not hard to adjust your offensive strategy to just running out the clock. The Falcons would have been better off just Kneeling on the ball after the 9 minute mark really....
Here are the waning moments...
> Falcons get the onside kick and do nothing with it. Complete blown opportunity....then they punt [Score: 28-9 ATL]
>Patriots drive the whole field and kick a field goal, chewing up A LOT of time in the process [Score: 28-12 ATL]
>Falcons get the ball back, Telvin Coleman gets hurt, Ryan tries to pass the next play and fumbles [Score: 28-12 ATL]
>Patriots score and get the 2-point conversion [Score: 28-20 ATL]
>Atlanta gets the ball and makes a miraculous pass and catch to Julio Jones. The run wide to the left, lose 2 yards, and then the next play Ryan gets sacked way back at the 40 or so. Ryan makes a completion the next play but there's a holding call. Next pass is incomplete, Atlanta punts... [Score: 28-20 ATL]
>Patriots get the ball, drive the field and tie the game [Score: 28-28 ATL]
It was apparent to me that the Patriots D took it to another level in the 2nd half...so why not play the clock and make the Patriots beat you.
Greatest Super Bowl? Maybe if you're a Patriots fan....
Biggest Choke Job? I've never seen anything like it....the biggest "chokes" I can recall are the famous Oilers-Bills Playoff game where the Bills came back 35 down to win
The other game is the '94 FSU-Florida game: "The Choke at the Doak" ...where Danny Kanell brought FSU back from a 31-3 deficit late in the 3rd quarter to tie it 31-31
This also reminds me of Spurs-Heat I in the NBA Finals, Game 6, where they wheeled the NBA trophy out to give to the Spurs, but Lebron hit a magical 3 to send it to overtime, where the Heat won
I think the only way Atlanta recovers is if they go on a mission in 2017 to get back to the Super Bowl and win it. They have the talent and the team to do it. Otherwise this loss is going to sting Atlanta forever

I agree with everything you said except I believe it was Ray Allen who hit the magical 3 for the Heat against the Spurs. Other than that, spot on - Atlanta pissed down their collective legs - Kyle Shanahan probably has diaper rash he pissed himself so much...

Everyone here is attributing the comeback to Atlanta chocking. I noticed that NE was on fire on both sides of the ball starting at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter, and consistently made the critical plays.

I noticed that NE was on fire on both sides of the ball starting at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter, and consistently made the critical plays. Atlanta CHOKED! All they had to do to win the game was, kneel three times at the 22 and kick a FG. With one of the BEST FG kickers in the game.
NE was unstoppable in the second half... when, they started playing the way I thought they would at the start: Running, ball control throws, keep the ball away from Atlanta.
But, Atlanta had a big enough lead, late enough in the game... all they had to do was 'play smart'..
The didn't. That is the DEFINITION of a "choke".

The very next day, the Saints blew the biggest 4th quarter lead in playoff history. That made it a LITTLE easier to be an Oiler fan. :-(

The same could be said for NE in the first half. The bottom line is that NE dominated time of possession nearly 2-1, had more than twice as many first downs, made every critical play from 8:30 left in the game to the end, and dominated total yardage. I am reminded of Marshall being down 38-8 to East Carolina in a bowl game. ECU scored another 23 points, yet lost 64-61. Huge, highly improbable comebacks happen in nearly every sport.

My favorite of all time, Jean Van de Veld at the 1999 British open. Northern Iowa blowing a 12 point lead with less than a minute to play was brutal. And poor, old Dan Wheldon died in a crash later that year after Hildebrand handed him the Indy 500.

Atlanta has finally stumbled on a heartbreaking sports moment that tops their 1991 World Series loss to the Minnesota Twins.

I noticed that NE was on fire on both sides of the ball starting at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter, and consistently made the critical plays. With a 16 point lead, facing a 3rd and 1, Atlanta decided to throw the ball. Ryan was hit, fumbled and NE got the ball on a short field. that was the point the game turned. At that point, Atlanta was playing the clock, not NE, they should have been eating the clock. If they run it eats 45 seconds every play. If they run and don't make it, they punt and give NE a long field to cover. Had Atlanta had the presence of mind to run 3 MORE RUNNING PLAYS they would be holding a parade in Atlanta today.

Choking means crumbling under pressure. Atlanta was certainly guilty of some bad calls and poor execution, but they didn't crumble under pressure with a 16-point lead, anymore than NE in the first half.

Well they did fumble because the QB was hit due to a missed blocking assignment, they were sacked on second and 12 due to poor offensive blocking, they were guilty of a hold which pushed them back even more and they returned a ball out of the endzone when they could have started their final drive at the 25. All mental issues cause by the stress of blowing a 25 point lead. I consider that choking. But still, if the run 3 more run plays (the 3rd and 1 I referenced above and the 2nd and 3rd down plays on their second to last possession) they'd be Super Bowl champs - at the least, the coach calling the plays spit the bit screwed the pooch, pissed down his leg or....choked.

1st down at the 22 yd line, with 4:00 minutes remaining, and an 8 point lead?? NO WAY you do anything other than run the ball three times. Yards GAINED do NOT MATTER. You need to take time and time outs away your opponent, and take a 2 score lead. . Matt Ryan actually had time to throw the ball away.... he didn't. But, he should never have been in that position
