As 'slam dunk' as Viola Davis is for Best Supporting Actress, this may be the most 'up in the air' race. Mahershala Ali won the SAG. Dev Patel won the BAFTA. Michael Shannon's co-star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, won the Golden Globe and didn't get nominated for the Oscar; Shannon did. And then you have the youngster - Lucas Hedges, and the senior citizen - Jeff Bridges, to round out the category.
When you look closer, Patel winning the BAFTA shouldn't be a surprise as he's from England; same with Taylor-Johnson winning the Golden Globe, he's foreign. Hedges may be a bit young to snag the award - his honor is being nominated. I think it comes down to Ali and Bridges. Actors vote on the SAG awards and Ali was the winner there. Bridges has had a long, impressive career ands many times the winner in Supporting Actor gets it as a life-time achievement award - George Burns, Jack Palance, Sean Connery, Martin Landau, Charles Coburn and Alan Arkin to name a few. The thing is, Bridges already has an Oscar which he received less than 10 years ago and I think his character was pretty much a modern day, Rooster Cogburn, which he was nominated for in 2010. That leaves Ali. The Academy was hammered last year for being 'too white' - I think both supporting awards will go to black performers. I rate them like this....
1. Mahershala Ali - Moonlight 2. Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water 3. Dev Patel - Lion 4. Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals 5. Lucas Hedges - Manchester by the Sea
Tomorrow I'll break down the Best Actress race.
One more thing - last night I watched A Place in the Sun with Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and a much slimmer Shelley Winters. It lost Best Picture to An American in Paris in 1951. Very good movie - Elizabeth Taylor was a beautiful woman in her day - but as I watched it play out (and adding that my wife and I are currently watching The People vs OJ Simpson on Netflix) I couldn't help but think that Montgomery probably would have walked had Johnny Cochran been his attorney! (Hope I didn't give away too much!)

I was under-whelmed with Bridges in Hell or High Water... I agree with you. When there's ANY doubt, the black actor will win this year.

Of all the luck he knocks up Shelley just as Liz was falling into his lap! But I believe he was actually gay in real life so what a waste that was to make out with Liz on screen!

Translates to: "And your Mama too!"
It's a Mexican movie, with subtitles.... It has a pretty large amount of sex in it (STARTS RIGHT AWAY!) But, it's really not JUST a sex movie. It has some interesting other themes. And, it's a great view of what life in Mexico is like... or, was like. I recommend it. It was thought-provoking... and, pretty darn funny.
The only issue was... with the sub-titles, you HAVE To watch the screen at all times. NO multi-tasking. :-(

I'll have to get it in my queue...
My son tells me to watch a Brazilian movie called 'City of God' but I haven't for the same reason - subtitles. I will say 'Amelie' from France was very good and half the movie 'Lion' is subtitled - I thought the subtitled part was actually better than the second half.
