Back in 2008 - when Blockbuster was still the #1 way to rent movies - I picked up the movie, The House Bunny. It was a pretty stupid movie but I got it because I've always thought Anna Farris is pretty funny (and cute) and it was a mindless way to spend the evening. One of the co-stars was a little red head who, despite being in a silly teen comedy, I thought was acting her ass off. I remember asking my daughter who she was and making the bold prediction that someday she was going to win an Academy Award. That actress was/is Emma Stone. Two years ago she was nominated for Birdman but lost to Patricia Arquette (which I thought was a joke). This year I think my prediction comes true; Emma Stone will win for her performance in La La Land. It's a movie about actors and following your dreams which resonates with the academy. In a way the movie is about Emma Stone, and many others like her, who went to Hollywood to be a star but had to work at coffee shops to make ends meet before getting that first big break. I'm not going to call this a slam dunk but I'd be very surprised if Emma Stone doesn't win.
I'll also add that if Meryl Streep wins I may be done with the Oscars. Her grandstanding speech at the Golden Globes made me sick and if the academy votes for her because of it, I think I'll puke. She shouldn't even be nominated - Amy Adams from Arrival should be in her spot. Here is how my ballot would look....
1. Emma Stone - La La Land
2. Natalie Portman - Jackie
3. Isabelle Huppert - Elle
4. Ruth Negga - Loving
5. Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins (actually she wouldn't even make it on my ballot - I'd leave the #5 spot empty!)
Tomorrow we'll do the Best Actor category.
