If I was an NFL team, and my team was locked in to a playoff spot (or if my season was over), I'd be resting key players and a good portion of my starters.
Example: Jacksonvile Jaguars
they have nothing to gain by winning. They are locked into the playoffs and will host a game in the Wild Card Round. Sit your stars....don't risk a stupid injuries. I would sit Bortles, Fournette, Ramsey, Ngakou, calias campbell, etc.
They play the Titans and Tennesee will be fighting and scraping to get in the playoffs....you might be playing them again the next week. Let them tire themselves out.
Another Example: Dallas Cowboys
They are eliminated. I would maybe play Ezekial and Dak a few drives, and then slowly start taking starters out. There is nothing to play for this last week

The beauty of playoffs. A bunch of games that mean NOTHING!

And a bunch of games that will decide either participation or seeding for the playoffs. The most games like that I can remember.

And a bunch of games that will decide either participation or seeding for the playoffs. The most games like that I can remember. There are actually more teams who's positions are already locked in than I remember in most years. This may be the DULLEST week 17 ever... and, they're all pretty dull. Week 16 was awful too. In the NFC, it's pretty much ALL set. The only remaining question is: Seahawks or Falcons. In the AFC, the top seed is in question, but... it's a 98% chance it's the Pats. Then, you have Ravens, Titans, Chargers, Bills... all playing for two spots. Two will be left out. So, in total.. out of 32 teams, only THREE will be eliminated this weekend. To me, the most interesting question is: will the playoffs revive interest in the NFL? I doubt it. Fantasy football is over now. I think the ratings will tank even more than in the regular season.

Not just the Seahawks/Falcons, but also, who wins the South, the Saints or the Panthers. And, except for the Eagles, all the other teams must play there starters for seeding purposes. I think every team involved in the playoffs, except the Eagles, must play to win this weekend. Now not all are great games (Pitt vs. Cleveland), but they can not sit there stars.

The NFC South is up for grabs...and a chance to host a playoff game
I'm interested to see if the Chargers can make it in as well
Bevo is anti-NFL

There has been no bigger fan of the NFL than me for the past 50 years... I promise that is true. But honestly, I can barely stomach watching a game anymore. If not for fantasy football? I would NEVER watch it, and would be happier for it. Too many penalties, too obviously bogus penalties, too many injuries (bogus concussions), too many idiot players. I will not watch a single game this weekend. There is no reason to. This game is 100% rigged. It's a scandal that will break, some day. I doubt that I will care by then.

Not that the NFL will change, but the playoffs aren't the cause of sandbagging, its the divisional and conference format. The less teams in direct competition makes it easier for teams to clinch. However, if for example, the NFL was one 32 team division and the top 12 advanced, depending on tiebreakers, as many as seven teams would still have a shot at homefield through to the Super Bowl.

as many as seven teams would still have a shot at homefield through to the Super Bowl. Your original point is correct, but... this one is not. With tie-breakers already known, it's highly unlikely that any of the 11-4 teams would have a shot. But, you're right... Having Divisions with only 4 teams is ridiculous.

I wouldn't play key players if it wasn't to my advantage, especially if I'm already locked into a game next week.

While the 32 team listing is a nice idea, it is not practible, unless you have a 31 game schedule. LOL. The divisions allow for a balanced schedule. Every team is playing the same number of home games, the "same" teams and it does lead to rivalry's. Not as intense as college ones, but still rivalries.

The most important function of the divisions is: it keeps fans interested in their team, even if they’re bad. It never seems like such an impossible hurdle if you only have to beat three other teams.

At least in the NFL and every other team sport that has a championship post season, no starters choose to sit out. Not so in big time CF's exhibition post season.
