Last week, I was shown a presentation from our finance group showing some of the expected affects of Trump's Tax Cut bill on our company. One of the smaller ones was:
None of our ticket expenses for the Kentucky Derby will be deductible anymore. In the past, they were deductible as a "marketing expense". We bring in high level customers every year for the weekend. We can still deduct the cost for meals and hotels, but.... NOT for the sporting event.
Our accountant told me the same would be true for things like: Super Bowl tickets, Golf tournaments, Club Level season tickets for Louisville football and basketball games. Before this bill, 50% of the cost of these was deductible. Now, NONE are.
We will continue to purchase Derby tickets. It's our most important event. But, I'm not sure we're going to continue with the UofL seats.
Sports marketing expenses have really skyrocketed in the past few years. This new law MIGHT take a little air out of that bubble?? We'll see.

Similarly, people will no longer be able to claim PSA and seat license fees as a tax deduction. We had quite a few season ticket holders pre pay a year or two to get the deductions in 2017. I think as long as our team remains solid it shouldn't be a probelm but I wonder if people will be willing to spend that kind of money with no deduction for a crappy product.

I think at the traditional high-ticket-demand schools, the effects will be marginal. Others may see more pronounced effects.

As long as the high ticket-demand schools continue to play at a high level then they will be OK. I don't think the tax deduction will have a big impact at Ohio State but they also have switched ticket pricing where the average ticket price is over $100 per game. This year PSU was $121 MSU was $161 and last year ttun was $195. They can get these prices now but when Ohio State falls back into the pack which will happen at some point, I think they will have a hard time unloading those seats unless they adjust the prices accordingly. I usually only go to 3 or 4 games per season and have considered just to pay the premium for the games I really want to go see. The only reason I went to games like UNLV was simply because I had the ticket. I certainly would have been fine missing that one.
