The double standard regarding SEC teams is common knowledge in the mythical system Saw this on the interwebs today:
Wanted: Sportscasters for Major Sports Network
ESPN is looking for on air personalities.
Must be able to suspend reality, be able to identify all SEC teams based on double blind jock sniffing test and spell S-E-C.
Must be able to answer any college football question with the answer "SEC" and be able to properly answer the question "who is on upset alert this weekend?" by saying "Clemson".
Prefer experience being failed, former SEC head coaches (ex. Bill Curry, Lou Holtz), former linemen who have early onset dementia from multiple concussions (ex. Trevor Matich) or just plain ol’ dumb f*cks (ex. Jesse Palmer).
Apply in person and bring 8×10 glossy head shot.

Some talking heads kill me though:
"Baylor is at 2 when they should be ranked 4" or "OKlahoma State is 25 and they really are 22"
I know exactly what you mean. I spent a little time on Saturday yelling at one of those jerks.
Some of the talking heads feel that even if Clemson goes 13-0 and Stanford beats Utah and wins the P12, Stanford will be in and Clemson will not....just the because they are "Stanford" apparently.
This is where Hen has a good point - some teams "sound" better than others.
Hopefully, the Committee has more sense than that...

Polls mean little. No reason to get worked up over them. Just enjoy the season and let the games play out. When the dust settles, I doubt anyone will think that the four teams selected by the committee are not deserving.

In the BCS days polls were a big deal. Not so much now with the playoff system. However last year during playoff rankings I thought we had 3 SEC teams in the top 4 at one point. Clearly perception plays a role early on. The only question is how does perception have an impact when making that final selection. We could all pick a point we don't agree with and judge from there. I think the only fair way to judge the work of the committee is the choice of playoff teams. Everything else(the weekly committee picks) is just made for TV crap.
Early perception has no more meaning than the polls do now.
Last year the early perception had OSU outside the top 15. Clearly, the early perception did not determine the playoff teams.
I think SOS should play a larger role(as you have rightly cited the Mississippi teams playing weak schedules) but my opinion is not the consensus...and never was to wit Boise's lofty ranking a few years ago having played a pitiful schedule. I thought Ohio State definitely played their way into the playoff....that blow out win of Wisconsin put them over the top

That's nonsense....if Clemson goes undefeated, they'll be in.... The only way I see them having trouble is if all P5 champs are undefeated...it would then be between Utah and Clemson And if that happened, the sports media and everyone would be demanding expansion of the playoff

I think the committee did a very good job last year. I also think that if tOSU did not win convincingly that they would not have been in the mix. As long as the committee separates what the teams did as opposed to who they and what conference they did then it will be pretty hard to complain. Last season there were clearly some arguments for TCU and Baylor which were legitimate but in the end I think they got it right.

If there does happen to be 5 undefeateds, Baylor, with their atrocious OOC schedule should be the one on the outside looking in...IMO.

When the regular season is complete and there are multiple teams with similar records and resumes the ESPN marketing managers will determine the market value of those teams considered and.....shockingly ... this so called cartel's selection committee will mysteriously agree....just as in year one of the Invitational. Don't trust the cartel or the mythical system.

I just can't imagine the committee wrestling with the question of how teams sound. I can imagine them saying we have 6 teams who are worthy and we must chose 4.
The number 4 is the problem.
ACC Winner PAC12 Winner BIG10 Winner SEC Winner BIG12 Winner Notre Dame
Pick four and make everyone like it.
You just can't carry six pounds of crap in a four pound bag.

The SEC is so full of big schools with hordes fans, if no SEC school made the playoff, that there would be a revolt— possibly even an overthrow of the US government...at least a blockade of 285 around Hotlanta. Let this be a warning.
