Remember when it was controversial for Leonard Fournette to skip a bowl game to "Prepare for the NFL Draft"?
The list of players skipping bowl games this year runs two pages long.

I listened to many ESPN talking heads say LF should “save” himself for the PROs. Some seem to think this is a great. I don’t. Putting yourself before your team is a terrible trend.

Kind of disagree, Hero. For pro prospects looking after your upcoming livelihood is more important than some post season exhibition event risks.

I tend to agree with Hen on this one.
Team effort is important. If the game matters (ie: playoff games ) But a true exhibition game ?
With the new guaranteed salaries offered NFL draft picks, it’s pretty risky. Especially for kids coming from families with nothing.
I have believed for awhile now that this trend will be part of the justification for expanding the playoff.

Yep, let Alabama not make the playoff and see how many of the elite, eligible players decide to skip the bowl. I think all of Michigan players are bailing. I think what happened to Jaylen Smith a couple years ago is a big reason you see guys skipping the bowls (with exception to the playoff games).

But, in the end, an NFL RB has an ever decreasing life span...defensive players keep getting bigger and stronger....bodies can only take so many collisions.

Denzel Ward sat out the Cotton Bowl last year, wound up being the 4th player taken overall and signed a $20 million contract. Nick bosa will probably be #1 or #2 this year and sign for even more. I get being there for your team but you also have to look out for your future - to me, one game is not worth your future. God love the guys who do play but I'm not going to fault the ones who don't.

That pretty well sums up the way I feel about it. The dollars have just gotten to be SO BIG, it's almost irresponsible to even think about playing. IMO, the NCAA (or bowls) are going to have to come up with some way to provide insurance for the players or, there'll soon be NO NFL potential draftees playing.
