I'm more concerned with how it looks in December but obviously if the playoffs were this week Ohio State, Alabama, TCU and Baylor would be in based on the rankings. We'll see how things look December 6.

We'll see how things look December 6. Ohio State practically has a berth with that schedule...they'll be favored the rest of the way. Michigan State is the only team that could cause them problems.... The SEC West is a gauntlet....who knows who will emerge at this point. Auburn and Alabama could look at getting Georgia not just once but twice as well! Texas A Notre Dame, Clemson, and Georgia Tech all play each...FSU plays both Clemson and GT. Someone could emerge from that group, or they could eliminate each other The Big XII is weak IMO, and TCU and Baylor stand a good chance at beating most of their schedule I'm not sold on USC, or anyone from the PAC 12 this year....IMO, it's a weak year for that conference. Doesn't mean someone could still break through though

I still recall sitting in Ohio Stadium in November of 1998 watching Ohio State play a Michigan State team coach by Saban. Ohio State is up 24-6 and had just forced another punt. It's midway into the 3rd quarter. They had destroyed every team they played that year and appeared destined to be in the first BCS championship game. So MSU punts, and a kid ahead of the return man with his back to the ball is blocking a Spartan player heading down for the tackle. The return man lets the ball bounce and it takes a bizarre bounce, hitting the blocker in the back. MSU recovers, momentum shifts and the next thing you know, the Spartans are up 28-24. They had a tall receiver who caught everything thrown his way - Plaxico Burress. On OSU's last play, Joe Germaine throws an interception in the end zone. That team would go on to win their fina games all by double digits and wind up #2 in the country behind Tennessee which won the BCS championship. I think this year's team is better but that team was loaded. To this day I think they could have beaten Tennessee or FSU (who was the other team in the BCS game) but it was not to be. It just goes to show that 18-22 year old boys can have bad days and you can't assume anything. I'm not assuming they're a shoe-in for the playoffs but admit that I like their chances. But one game into the season there is simply too much football left to make hotel reservations and book my flight to Glendale.

Funny story, Doc. Yes... you just never know. I still don't understand how OSU lost to VaTech LAST year... in the Shoe! Of course, this year... there are FOUR spots, not 2. So, you're chances are already better. But, I'm not sure the B1G gets two teams in who both have a loss. So, if you split with somebody? It might come down to WHEN the loss happened. You just never know.
I agree that Big XII is weak this year. That means, the winner of the TCU-Baylor game will get an invite. Since, they'll very likely be undefeated. WHO KNOWS about the SEC?? I think their Champ gets in, even if they have THREE losses. Same with the PXII. Basically, the B1G, ACC, and Big XII are three conference fighting for 2 spots.
I'll sure be glad when they expand to 8.

TCU was the least impressive among the top teams. Agreed... but, maybe Minnesota is not THAT bad?
TCU did open with a road win against a decent team... despite obviously not hitting on all cylinders. I expect Patterson will whip them into shape.

Although TCU was not impressive it could actually held them down the road. As long as Minnesota has a decent year this win will look really good in December.

I still recall sitting in Ohio Stadium in November of 1998 watching Ohio State play a Michigan State team coach by Saban. Still remember that game like it was yesterday. It was probably the most heartbreaking loss in that I attended in the stadium. That team was amazingly good. The only other game that compares is the 96 Michigan game. Three drives inside the 10 and only get 9 points. 14 - 9 final. Both those games I recall the stadium being deadly silent as they walked out. Thank goodness Tressel put an end to those tupes of days in the shoe.

VT and Duke avoid both. Could give them a leg up in the Coastal.

And I was also at the 95 game in Ann Arbor. That team was so loaded on offense - Eddie George, Terry Glenn, Ricky Dudley, Bobby Hoying - and that damn Biakabutuku had the game of his life.

The 1988 Oklahoma game when Von Schumann kicked the FG was devastating. It was devastating but you're 11 years off, that game was played in 1977. I was a sophomore at Ohio State at the time. OU raced out to a 20-0 lead before OSU knocked Thomas Lott (the most electrifying opposing player I've ever witnessed in person) out of the game. Ohio State scored 28 straight points and looked like they had the win when the Sooners failed on a 2 point conversion play but they recovered the onside kick to set up Von Schamman's winning FG. I remember the entire stadium chanting 'Block that kick' and Uwe standing at midfield actor like a director with a baton - urging the crowd to get louder. He then knocked the kick right down the middle - it would have been good from 60 yards. That OSU team would go on to lose to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl pretty badly - Woody vs Bear.
