If I had to just sit down and pick the top 4 teams today, I would pick:
Georgia Alabama Florida Oregon
Those teams look like the best teams at this point.
Oregon should be on cruise control until the UCLA game. UCLA just blew a game to Fresno State....so their playoff chances took a massive hit
Alabama still looks good...Georgia looks better IMO. That Bama defense got gashed by the Gator offense. As impressive as Florida was yesterday, they still have a road game AT LSU (probably a night game), and then the big showdown with Georgia. Tough games. Arkansas is intriguing...they play Texas A&M and Georgia the next two weeks.
Still not impressed with Oklahoma in the Big XII, and they have ALOT of tough games ahead. Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Texas will be huge tests. I think Texas might end up being the best team in the Big XII. I think the conference eats itself and misses the playoff.
Big 10? While all eyes are on Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State are slowly building...I think Iowa is a good team, but probably not the juggernaut everyone thinks they are
Cincinnati is still winning and hanging around...they play Notre Dame in South Bend in 2 weeks in what could be the biggest game ever in Bearcat history. Welcome to the big time Bearcats.
ACC looks awful...Clemson is an upset away from missing the playoff. I think some ACC team is going to pick them off...they have a road game AT NC State next week, and then host 3-0 Boston College. They also have tricky road games AT Pitt and AT Louisville later in the season. What are the odds that Clemson's offense comes around enough to finish the rest of the season unbeaten? Not good IMO.

Devils advocate what has Florida done to top 4? What has Alabama done other than being last years champion to merit being 1? They blew out a Miami team that should be 0-3….. Florida looked kinda mediocre against South Florida and Florida International. I’d say Penn State and Oregon deserve top 4 status and I’d probably keep Alabama and Georgia

Alabama-- you're seriously asking what Alabama has done to merit their ranking? As Joe Biden would say, COME ON MAN
Oregon is in my top 4
Penn State?? I don't really know what kind of team Penn State is, but I don't trust the coaching. Ditto for Auburn, who they just beat. We will know more about Penn State and Auburn when they hit conference play. Let me see more of Penn State vs. Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State. Same with Auburn vs. SEC West teams. Basically I'm highly skeptical of both teams...I need to see more.

I don’t disagree with Alabama’s ranking I’m simply saying we don’t know how good they are this year yet…… Florida did look awfully mediocre vs South Florida and FIU. If you take last year out of the equation I think Georgia has looked like the best team but…… college football really shouldn’t release rankings until about week 5.

What does "deserving" have to do with the mythical system ?

Well, if they only beat the interns, that doesn't seem worthy of a top 4 ranking. :-)

All three teams we have played dropped 8+ into coverage and we still can't run the ball. Our defense hasn't given up a touchdown through three games (1st in NCAA history) , and we're unhappy. Man it's good to be a Clemson Tiger.

Lol my whole point was we really don’t know how good any of these teams are until about week 5…… this year right now I know the talent is there but the way my Buckeyes have played they are barely top 20…… same goes with Clemson. I’m not saying Ohio State or Clemson aren’t talented but as of right now based on they’ve looked ….. the only reason they are in the top 15 is because they started in the top 5.

So Bama gets credit for beating Miami by 30 in a neutral site then barely gets by Florida and you anoit them #1 Florida gets number three because they have beaten absolutely no one but played Bama close. Michigan St which beat the exact same Miami team on the road by 20 gets no love And Penn St who arguably has the best resume in football gets no love as well and are deemed boring Do you actually think Oregon in the fourth best team. Seems like you should have AM with your logic in play

Seems like you should have AM with your logic in play Actually I'm pretty impressed with the start the Big 10 has had this season.
In addition to Iowa and Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State are quietly rising to the top. Ohio State is still solid besides losing to Oregon.
In a typical poll, Florida would be way down, but in fact the AP agrees with me on the 3 of the 4. I'm looking at it from a Power Ranking view...I think those are the 4 best teams. Not far off are Big 10 teams though. I definitely see the Big 10 in the playoff. Will it be Ohio State? I'm reversing my "boring" statement I made earlier...especially after watching the NFL this weekend. Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame should be a fun game.
As far as Miami, I said they were crap after the Bama game...I have numerous threads on it. Diaz will be done IMO.
I don't really have much faith in Texas A&M...we shall see this weekend when they play Arkansas. In the SEC, there are contenders, and their are pretenders. I think Auburn and Texas A&M are pretenders. Not sure about Arkansas and Ole Miss.

I still think it is too early to tell who the pretenders and the contenders are. However I do think the OOC games will play a big part on which teams get into the CFP. The BIG and SEC clearly look the best. The B12 has been decent but no real marquee wins. The ACC is in a world of hurt. They only have 2 teams unbeaten and we still have a week to go in September. Clemson does not look like world beaters in any way shape or form at the moment. I don't see them winning out but if they do then they will be lucky to have more than 2 wins over a top 25 team. In years past Clemson got the benefit of the doubt because they played more teams with winning records. Not going to happen this year. The P12 was looking good early on but they laid some serious eggs as of late. UCLA, USC, Washington all tanked. Oregon is good but not great. They are pretty much the only hope and I don't see it happening. Cinti and Notre Dame are the other players and they play each other. They need each other to win every other game and win the head to head.

My Tigers are far from the only underperforming power. Oklahoma - a sexy national champion pick entering the season - has looked ordinary in close wins over a murderer’s row of Tulane and Nebraska. Ohio State’s offense has looked the part, but its atrocious defense has already caused one loss and two uncomfortable wins.
Alabama barely won this week, and while Georgia has been solid, its entire resume rests on a win over Clemson — which is hardly a hat-hanger the way the Tigers have played thus far.
That’s not even mentioning teams like Texas A&M and Notre Dame, which have each had near misses against terrible teams. All this is to say that no team has proven to be truly elite yet this season, and the teams that get it together the soonest will be the ones that are able to make a push.
