Both conferences are attempting to lure teams from the other. After the departure of Houston, Cincinnati, and Central Florida, the AAC will be at eight teams and the MWC at twelve. It appears likely that Air Force and Colorado State are going to move to the AAC. That would put each conference at ten teams. Boise State and Memphis are still on the Big 12 radar. If they go, both conferences are at nine teams. Why don't they just merge, play an eight-game division-only schedule with a title game? The 18-team (or 20 team if BSU and Memphis stay put) conference's champion would "almost" be guaranteed an NY6 berth under the current setup and would be nearly an automatic playoff team if the 6+6 model is adopted.

That does make sense. And the teams could still schedule the other division as nonconference to fill their schedules.

Looks like AFA and CSU have turned down the AAC offer; likely needed the addition of Army to make it happen. Look for the MWC to grab a couple of Texas schools (SMU or UNT plus UTSA likely) before the AAC can move to plan C.
