Simply double the # of teams from the current four to eight. But ELIMINATE the conference championship games. Conferences can award their regular season championship to the team with the best record, as they used to do. All playoff games played on campus except for the championship game which can be at a neutral site. Time to kick the bowls to the curve - they don't need to be involved in the playoff at all. We don't need teams, fans, etc going from neutral site CCG's to 2-3 more neutral bowl sites in a row.
Instead of conference championship games, last weekend we should have had four quarter-final games played ON CAMPUS. Much more exciting atmospheres, every game meaningful, and no one would have to play more than 15 games (12 regular season + 3 playoff games if you go to the natty.) Same max we have now.
No conference auto-bids either. Plenty of room for G5 teams, Notre Dame, a strong conference runner-up, etc as there would be 2X as many spots as there are now. Would prefer objective rules like CJ has always talked about, but if keeping the committee then eight is better than four. And 12 with byes is silly - glad they are rethinking that.

I prefer more as oppose less. The absolute for me is eliminate the College Football Committee.

I prefer the auto bids. That gives EVERY team in the P5 a chance to play their way in. And one, highest ranked G5. But, I know that will never fly. It would immediately lead to anti-trust suits.
It’s critical to maintain the pretense that “every team has a shot”
Your format could work.

...which was: 1. Georgia (presumable SEC Champ without the Atlanta game) 2. Michigan (Big 10 Champ) 3. Alabama 4. Cincinnati (American Champ) 5. Oklahoma State (Big XII Champ) 6. Notre Dame 7. Ohio State 8. Ole Miss
The actual playoff would be:
#8 Ole Miss @ #1 Georgia #7 Ohio State @ #2 Michigan #6 Notre Dame @ #3 Alabama #5 Oklahoma State @ #4 Cincinnati

The best idea I like from this is the elimination of the conference championship games. I think the CCGs have to go, or else they have to be legitimized. Right now we are in this vague in-between land, where one year we are told "oh the 13th data point is so important", so the Big XII gets a championship game AFTER playing a round robin, which makes the game pointless. Someone will always get a mulligan for this game (but probably not anymore since they are going to 12 with UT and OU leaving.)
Or else we get conference championship game losers that back into the playoffs: Georgia 2021, Oklahoma 2003, Nebraska 2001
I think college football could be a lot more flexible if they are just eliminated

an FBS legitimate championship would only take 15 games :
8 first round games 4 quarterfinal games 2 semi-final games 1 Champ game
...no byes necessary All games played on campus except champ game ( bid out)
All FBS conferences are eligible to compete and they can determine their champion any way they want. The 6 'at large' slots will accommodate strong and worthy league runner-ups. Simple -nothing to it.

Getting rid of the CCG's would be a HUGE plus

Getting rid of the CCG's would be a HUGE plus the only truly successful championship game has been the SEC Championship game
Baylor won their mulligan game against Oklahoma State Utah had to beat Oregon again Why did Michigan have to play Iowa??
The conference championship games really don't do much for the regular season.

The only good thing about the CCG’s is, in the big unbalanced conferences like the SEC and B1G, teams like Georgia and Iowa can’t skate by on an easy schedule, while getting credit for being in a tough conference. They HAVE to play at least one good team.
But, just as often, it’s a repeat game. And, I hate those.
In a round robin like the Big 12, it makes NO sense. They only added it to get the same # of games played for CFP consideration.

Correct, except the committee should do their best to avoid first round rematches if resumes between two seeds are similar. So in the example above, they would flip the 7 and 8 seeds (or flip the 2 and 3 seeds) so that Ohio State doesn't play Michigan again.

The CCG's were much more important when we had a two-team playoff (BCS) so as to provide another data point of separation to try to attempt to get down to just two teams. It is OK with the four-team playoff, but once you get to an eight team playoff they are completely unnecessary. Everyone can just play 12 games and then the top eight resumes go into an eight team playoff. Play the four quarter finals on campus that first Saturday in December. No one has to play more than 15 total games. Hard to see any worthy teams being left out in this scenario. Should include all unbeatens and probably all worthy one loss teams.
