The nominations will be announced in about 45 minutes - here are my predictions for the top awards....
Animated Feature
Luca
En Canto
Raya and the Last Dragon
Flee
The Mitchells vs the Machines
I've seen them all but Flee - my 2 favorites were Luca and The Mitchells
Supporting Actress
Kirsten Dunst - Power of the Dog
Caitriona Balfe - Belfast
Ariana DeBose - West Side Story
Ruth Negga - Passing
Aunjanue Ellis - King Richard
I'd like to see Marlee Matlin from CODA or Judy Dench from Belfast get a nomination but I think they'll be on the outside looking in.
Supporting Actor
Ciaran Hinds - Belfast
Troy Kotsur - CODA
Kodi Smit-McPhee - Power of the Dog
Ben Affleck - The Tender Bar
Jared Leto - The House of Gucci
I'd prefer to see Jesse Plemons from Power of the Dog or Mike Faist from West Side Story get a nomination - JK Simmos is also a wildcard for Being the Ricardos. Bradley Cooper is also a possibility but I thought his Licorice Pizza performance was a little over the top.
Best Actress
Olivia Colman - The Lost Daughter
Nicole Kidman - Being the Ricardos
Kristen Stewart - Spencer
Lady Gaga - The House of Gucci
Jennifer Hudson - Respect
I'd really like to see Emelia Jones from CODA get a nomination - her audition scene was the best scene from a movie in 2021, made me cry! Rachel Zegler from West Side Story is dark horse - I won't be disappointed if Lady Gaga doesn't get a nomination.
Best Actor
Andrew Garfield - Tick, Tick....Boom!
Benedict Cumberbatch - The Power of the Dog
Will Smith - King Richard
Denzel Washington - The Tragedy of MacBeth
Mahershala Ali - Swan Song
A tough category with Peter Dinklage of Cyrano as a dark horse candidate
Best Director
Jane Campion - Power of the Dog
Denis Villeneuva - Dune
Ryuskie Hamaguchi - Drive My Car
Paul Thomas Anderson - Licorice Pizza
Kenneth Branagh - Belfast
Stephen Spielberg (West Side Story) is always threat and Maggie Gyllenhaal of The Lost Daughter could sneak in for her directorial debut.
Best Picture
Belfast
CODA
Drive My Car
Dune
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
Power of the Dog
Tick, Tick...Boom!
West Side Story
The Tragedy of Macbeth and Don't Look Up could sneak in. I've seen all but Drive My Car and Dune - I'd vote for Belfast or CODA at this point.
The announcement is in 18 minutes, there are always a few 'out of left field' surprises - we'll see how I do!
