3100 miles from San Diego to St. Augustine on a frickin' bike! What an amazing journey. Here's a link to a video of the finish - I lost it when I saw my grandson, I was not expecting him to be there...what an emotional day! www.facebook.com/vicki.esler/videos/643459971175348

Amazing !! I’ve read several books recently on retirement. All of them stress the importance of finding a new passion. Something to keep them emotionally, mentally and physically engaged. You might have over-achieved on this point, a bit, Doc! 😆
But what a joy, having your grandson welcome you to the Atlantic!
Congratulations!!

Thanks guys - I trained hard for this ride. I only missed about 30 days of riding over the past 5 years and that was due to illness, injury and I had a surgery back at Christmas time. Other than that I rode outside or on my Peloton every day. At one point I exercised 830 consecutive days and it paid off. I felt stronger and stronger every ride. 9 of the 39 legs of the ride were over 100 miles - the longest was 120 miles. The toughest part (besides Texas hill country) was the mental aspect of it all. We typically spent 8-10 hours a day on the bike and it wears on you mentally. You just have to keep pedaling. We also raised over $132,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - our goal was $100k. This was my way of paying it forward for everything LLS has done for me - LLS funded research helped lead to the drug I take which keeps my lymphoma in check. My hope is that some day all cancer patients will have their own pill.
Now I'm ready to get back to my grandparent duties. We have 3 grandsons now and we watch the brothers on Mondays and the youngest little guy comes over on Fridays. The little guys don't do much right now but the oldest (2 years, 3 months) is my buddy and we have a great time together - I'm sure he'll be a bit jealous when the younger boys start to take some of my time away from him. They growv up way too fast.

It’s scary, how fast they grow up. You’ll need to pedal a lot more to keep up. My 6 year old Grand-daughter already knows who she’s going to marry! 😬
Last night was the last night before our Direct Tv account expired. Before it went away, I watched ‘Splendor in the Grass’ … a movie I recorded last year. It is such a powerful film. Hard to believe it came out in 1961. I’ll always remember it as the last movie I watched on Direct TV.
The day before , I watched Harvey. Another interesting film.
Cinema has captured so much of our culture

Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood - great movie! Last night I DVred Sullivan's Travels which I've seen before but I'll be watching it again real soon. It was directed by Preston Sturges who also directed Miracle at Morgan's Creek and Hail the Conquering Hero - both also worth watching several times.
On our ride we passed through a little town called Marfa, Texas. About 10 miles before we got to town there were large painted images of scenes from the movie Giant from 1957 - there were images of Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean - the movie was filmed in and near Marfa. It was bizarre to see the images out in the middle of nowhere but pretty cool as well.
