Clemson's QB slid on 4th down, but he was just short of the 1st down.
Duke player commits targeting.
Refs rule dead ball foul, Duke takes possession, minus the 15 yards.

That doesn't sound right...sounds like it should have been a first down
Was it ACC officials?

That doesn't sound right...sounds like it should have been a first down Was it ACC officials? They called it correctly, becuase when a QB slides feet firsat the play is dead at that point, so the resulting targeting is a dead ball foul. Because he slid on 4th and didn't make it, it's a turnover on downs. However, how does this reconcile with a late hit out of bounds, dead ball late hit, auto 1st down.?

I used to watch Andy Dalton pull the 'slide short of a first down' just about every game for the Bengals - one time he killed the clock on 4th down....3 yards short of a first down.

It's a dumb rule. Defenses should not be rewarded for potentially harmful acts.
