For me it's probably Platoon.
On my short list would be:
Saving Private Ryan Midway (orig) Enemy at the Gates Full Metal Jacket Patton Stripes Heartbreak Ridge TEars of the Sun Apocalypse Now

I think the definition of "war movie" can start to span alot of movies. For example, Last of the Mohicans takes place during a war. You also have Troy and 300
I guess for modern times, I'd probably go with Saving Private Ryan. Dunkirk and We Were Soldiers aren't bad picks either
I have to say, I rewatched Apocalypse Now about a year ago, and I just don't think it holds up. I would not want to rewatch it
Also, I don't think I've ever actually watched Full Metal Jacket or Heartbreak Ridge.

Stripes isn’t a war movie, it’s a comedy army movie. I do love it. I quote from it often. “You can’t leave! All the plants will die!”
Much of it was filmed in Louisville.
Patton has to be my favorite.,,, by a pretty wide margin.
Midway too. And Sands of Iwo Jima.
From Here to Eternity was really good too.
And one, I saw many years ago … don’t remember the name. It’s was guys in a submarine. While they were submerged, nuclear war happened. Maybe Doc remembers
Dors Dr. Strangelove count as a war movie ?

Saving Private Ryan is about as good as they come. Both versions of All Quiet on the Western Front as outstanding - the recent Dunkirk and 1917 movies were very well done. But I have to say my favorite war movie is Bridge on the River Kwai, I list it as my # 5 Academy Award Best Picture. (I do like Patton, as well!)

Not sure if I saw the submarine movie - I saw Das Boot but that was a different story all together.

I just thought of another one - has anyone seen Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglas , from 1957. Devastating but awesome movie - Kubrick directed it.

Oh... I was thinking of "On the Beach". But, it's not really a war movie... more of Sci-Fi, drama
