If you haven't watched this show yet on Netflix... get on it. It's fantastic.
It really brings back incredible memories.
If you watch the film, you HAVE to conclude that Barry Sanders was something truly special. When I compare the overall rushing stats, from an objective point of view... I think the case can be made that Barry was the "Best NFL Rb ever". The only real competition to him for this honor, in my book, is Jim Brown. The two of them are the ONLY Rb's (with >10,000 yards) who averaged over 5 yds per carry. Jim was 5.2, Barry was 5.0. But Jim played on BETTER teams than Barry did... and, he only had 60% as many carries... which, hurts on a stat like "AVG per carry".
Barry Sanders ran in a completely different style than Jim Brown. Jim COULD juke you, but he preferred to run OVER you.
Barry left Reggie White looking for his jock strap.
I loved Emmitt. He was a warrior. But, he ran behind one of the best O-lines in history for many years of his career.
Walter Payton was special too.. and, he played on the SHITTIEST of teams. But, his true gift was longevity. Barry didn't even WANT to surpass Walter's yards.
You all know Earl Campbell is special to me. He was my FAVORITE EVER to watch. He didn't have 10,000 yards... only 9,400. His violent style shortened his career. By YPC, he would have been 7th on that elite list.
Overall.... I think, I would vote for Barry Sanders to be the most complete, most exciting, and yes... BEST Running Back in NFL history.
I know, he was one hell of a fun guy to watch play... no matter how bad the Lions were.
