I swear, it feels more political this year than ever before.
They really don't want FSU in the playoff, especially at the expense of one of their SEC baby-darlings Georgia or Alabama
Kirk Herbstreit: "it should be the best 4 teams"...this after years of "resume, resume, resume"
Reese Davis, before the show ended: "FSU and Louisville is the first CFP ranked team each will face." Cmon weasel boy, FSU played #5 LSU in week 1, when all the SEC honks and shills were talking about how good the LSU defense was going to be
Heather Dinich put out a predicted CFP Poll earlier with Oregon ahead of FSU lol, and of course Paul Finebaum has been spewing his trash, even saying Georgia should still be in if they lose
When the resumes don't support the SEC, the argument becomes "FOUR BEST TEAMS"
McElroy is right, we've NEVER said "Four Best Teams". It has always been a mix of factors, but primarily resume and records.
It's shocking to see how biased and shill-like ESPN has become.

I’m not sure “shocking” is the right word here?
“Frustrating “ “Disappointing” “Predictable”
Maybe … not shocking

I’m not sure “shocking” is the right word here? “Frustrating “ “Disappointing” “Predictable” Maybe … not shocking well, it shows how far the bar has moved for ESPN. They used to attempt analysis. Now its just out-right shilling for their conference. ESPN is the SEC's bullhorn
I mean, if we are going by what people "think" the best 4 teams are, then Georgia should have an automatic bid, right? Why should Washington get in? Georgia is better than them, right? The Bulldogs would be favored.
The thinking has pushed more towards "power rankings", instead of on-the-field results.
Texas beat Alabama early in the season, but Alabama has gotten way better while Texas has struggled. Alabama is a stronger team right?
No other sport does this, because it is completely asinine. In the NFL, it doesn't matter who's hurt, who's not; win your division, and you know you are in the playoff. PERIOD.
The answer is simple: Do you want to know who the best teams are? Have them play it on the field

In the meantime The FCS sweet 16 is playing this weekend toward an undisputed national champion. Like Evil said all other teams sports at all levels have figured out that PLAYING IS BETTER THAN VOTING !!!!!!......and all other team sports championships are administered and awarded by the governing body of that sport. There is a correlation . 120 years of big time CF championship bullshit continues.

let's look at Texas and Oregon...
The horns have 2 T25 wins, Ducks have only 1.
Common opponent - TT - Horns won by a boatload, Oregon had a 1 possession game with TT.
Best win - Bama v. OSU
The committee has Oregon as the best 1-loss team ahead of the Horns.
oregon = eye test texas = resume, and that's part of the problem, using these assessments for different teams, when it should be consistent.
Like the Heisman, some years it's yards, sometimes too many INTs, some years off the field work is more of a factor.

In a legitimate post season championship both Texas and Oregon would get an opportunity to compete......no need to compare, except for possible seeding

ESPN, and others are using the "not the same QB" argument against FSU and Texas...

Only one division in all of sports cares about “best team”.
ESPN is protecting their investment, so influencing the sport for profit might make college football the most American sport.
Why should they not? Aren’t they obligated to do this?

I think it’s important to remember the history of this sport to fully understand why things are as messed up as they are now. It never started as a planned, commercial enterprise. It was just a fun sport, and then friendly competition between universities. Heck, back in the day, Texas and Texas A&M players sat down and ate BBQ’d Bevo after the games.
It’s come a LONG way.
Because it started so early, long before TV or the NCAA, the control over it devolved to regional conferences. They had ALL the power, and then, the money. But, the influence of the schools remained strong. The University Presidents never wanted a national playoff, with one Champion. They preferred to pretend this wasn’t a national competition, and they loved the fact that 3,4, or more schools could “claim” to be the Champion.
And then, of course… there were the Bowls. Those guys were the first to really start making BIG money, and they fought like hell (still are) to maintain their share, and their control of where it goes. Talk about a cush job? Being on the Cotton Bowl committee meant >$400k annual salary for about 3 weeks of work. Who wouldn’t fight to keep that gig?
It’s been a long, hard struggle to get to a real playoff system. We have one, now…. The quarter finals are this weekend. But, it’s still a highly dysfunctional system. Next year, it will start to look more like a normal playoff. Without question, the genie is out of the bottle now. We won’t stop at 12, I can guarantee that. With any life luck at all, it’ll be 24 before I or Hen go to big press box in the sky.
College football, as most of us have known it, is over. It had a good run. It just outgrew its humble beginnings. Hopefully, it will stay interesting and MAYBE, the NCAA will grow up with it and finally come up with some uniformity of rules that make some kind of sense.
If they don’t, a new organization will probably arise that will. Hopefully, someone not named Dr. Pepper.

ESPN, and others are using the "not the same QB" argument against FSU and Texas... Yes, basically they are saying anything that will get Alabama and Georgia into the playoff Alabama has been a "different team" since their LSU win. And they would "beat Texas if they played again". But throw out that FSU win over LSU, that was "at the beginning of the season" The mental gymnastics to ensure the SEC Champion should unquestionably be in the playoffs is laughable. I'm also surprised Michigan didn't move ahead of Georgia in the latest rankings. Michigan beat #2, Georgia struggled with Georgia Tech It's a joke. ESPN is a joke

I disagree. Every school knows exactly what they need to do. It’s just extremely hard to do it.

It probably feels more political because now it is having a direct impact on your team. Every year this time of year you will see the ESPN\SEC Network have a continuous barrage of arguments justify why any SEC in contention deserves to be in. And typically, the committee using these arguments in there justification. I watch very little ESPN this year but did here them talked about how both the P12 and SEC were far better than the other conferences but fail to recognize how poorly they did in their OOC schedule. It's a complete joke. Next year will be different with 12 team. But then again there will be the standard SEC push to get as many SEC teams in as possible. Had we had a 12 team format this year I would fully expect endless arguments to why Mizzou, Ole Miss, and LSU need to make the field. This is the most asinine selection process for the post season in any sport and there not even a close second.

Good points Aufan and Bevo and good discussion of the roots of the FBS post season idiocy. Historically speaking, the single most impactful event, imo, is when the founding fathers of Pasadena , Ca invited a Midwestern college team to come and play an EXHIBITION football game, hoping to draw real estate investors. That started the whole post season exhibition nature of major CF and it continues today with assorted formats of the post season. A 4 team , strictly 'invitational', event is hardly a championship playoff for a sports entity of 132 teams and 10 conferences. And the decision of what teams are worthy to compete and which are not made by a bunch of folks in a conference room that won't be making any game plans or strategy, throwing or catching any passes, making any blocks or tackles etc etc is not sport championship competition.ALL other team sports, from the other 3 divisions of CF to little League baseball let the players and coaches of the teams, via actual on field elimination competition, decide who the champion is , who the final 2 and who the final 4 are. These things must be decided by playing, not voted opinions. Keep in mind what FBS stands for......it's the Football Bowl Sub division and that B stands for Bowls which are basically post season exhibition football games. In contrast, for example, the C in FCS stands for 'championship'. It's the championship sub division of D1 football. Those teams are actually playing and eliminating each other this week. The coaches, players and scoreboards decide everything....NOT committee room voting. Can't wait for next season and its quantum leap forward towards a legitimate championship playoff for big time CF. That's my rant for the week. Playing is light years better than voting.
