There is an interesting article about the necessity of conference championship games in the coming playoff era
And honestly, if you think about it, do we need them?
Take the Big 10 Conference...Michigan has the superior conference record, and superior overall record. Do we need to see them play Iowa? Iowa will still have a worse conference record even if they win
But what about eliminating divisions you say? Well then, we'd have Michigan-Ohio State AGAIN in a rematch.
What about the PAC 12 this year? Washington has to beat Oregon AGAIN.
We also nearly had Texas-Oklahoma again
I'm wondering if we are going to find these games becoming meaningless...

I still think they are. While the overall record may be different, the conference record is what you go by for the conference champion. Looking at the SEC this year, if you didn't have divisions, you have Alabama and Georgia tied at the top with 8-0 conference record. With the possibility of the top teams not playing each other, you have nothing to go by to decide who is champion and gets the auto bid in the future. The ACC had the possibility earlier this season with having 3 teams, undefeated and not playing each other. How do you decide that (of course it didn't happen). With the large conferences and not playing a full round robin schedule, CCG will still necessary

Have you noticed, Stumpy, that the FCS leagues don't have conference championship games but have real playoffs ? No point here, just an observation. And I think that holds true for D11 & D111 too.
