I’m not questioning who should or shouldn’t be in but think about this….Florida State was #4 going into championship week. Texas was #7. Florida State beat the #14 team with their 3rd string qb while Texas beat the #18 team. What happens? Texas jumps to #3 while FSU drops to #5. Texas jumped 4 spots beating a lower ranked team than FSU beat. How does this happen?
Well, the committee HAD to get Alabama in and couldn’t do it without Texas due to their head to head game in September. It’s that simple. As Hero said, I’m surprised Georgia didn’t get a bid but that couldn’t happen due to the Bama loss to Texas - if Bama had to be in, so did Texas.
I’ll add this - look at the non-conference games played by FSU and Michigan - not even close. Each team had a different set of criteria.
Florida St beats Florida (5 - 7) by 9
UGA beats GT (6 - 6) by 8
BAMA beats Auburn (6 - 6) with a hail mary plus the gift of a dropped punt in the final minutes. Considering Auburn took one on the chin 31 - 10 from NM St makes this one even worse.
All 3 wins were very unimpressive although FSU was the only team to win by more than 1 score.
Then we move to the SEC CCG. It is promoted as these 2 Juggernauts that that are far superior to the rest of the competition battling it out in a slugfest. Somehow BAMA survives with a 3 point win.
Now we have all of the ESPN\SEC pundits talk about how great both teams are and if it is truly the best 4 both should be in. During their endless babbling all they can talk about is how FSU is just a fraction of the team it was without it's starting QB Travis. Then they look at the previous few games without Travis and point out all of their deficiencies. Here is what they chose not to point out:
1) FSU was down to their 3rd string QB and would have had Rodemaker back for the CFP
2) Looking at the scores from the prior week (Championship week) FSU out performed both UGA and BAMA
3) BAMA needed an absolute miracle to beat a not very good Auburn team during rivalry week (that lost to NM St 31 - 10 the week before )
4) BAMA actually lost a game by double digits at home earlier in the year.
On a final note, why was tOSU not even considered in any of the discussions. They lost 1 game on the road to the #1 team in the country and were driving with the ball for the lead until the interception. ND was a close game on the road but that was it. UGA and Bama had many close calls which is omitted in the lobbying phase. That being said I don't think that tOSU deserves to be in but neither does BAMA. FSU was bent over and told to squeel like a piggy by the SEC\ESPN selection process. In support of Hen's position, this is truly an exhibition because without FSU in the mix we will never know who the best team really was.
