I keep seeing people who think Ohio State and Georgia should be considered for the CFP. They only have 1 loss. Why not?
To me, the reason is clear: the last week and the CCG games are de facto playoff games. This is what I was saying last week. Win now, maybe you move on… but for sure, if you lose, you’re probably OUT.
When, and how you lose matters when it comes to choosing between 1-loss teams. Bama hasn’t lost since Week 1, albeit it was a bad loss (10 points, at home). Texas’ only loss was the first week of October, on a TD pass in the last 15 seconds to a highly rated (at the time) OU team in major rivalry game. The smell of those fades over time.
It’ll all be moot next year. But now, even ONE loss puts a team a tremendous risk of not making the CFP, no matter when or how you do it. Losing late, is a killer. And now, I guess we have to say: even winning ALL your games puts you at risk…. If you’re not in the SEC.
