The Galax Maroon Tide, our local HS football team, won the Class 1 Virginia state championship last night, 7-6. A 14 year old freshmen, named Yandel Vera kicks a 42 yard field goal with 12 seconds left in game that bounces off the crossbar and, somehow, through for the winning score. Essex scored its 6 with a TD ( missed pat) and Galax scored its 7 with two safeties plus the FG. I wish I made the 95 mi trek to see that game. (I like defense)

That's crazy. High School football can be really fun to watch. You literally never know what you're going to see.

Yeah, good fun Bevo ......especially these small little mountain community school teams that might produce an FBS level player every 3 or 4 years or so.

VA high school football is great, as in most states. I remember when my son-in-law played for Briar Woods HS...he played OG for Trace McSorley. They won 3 back-to-back titles and went 55-5 over that span.

High school playoffs started around 1972 in Ohio. They started with 3 divisions and I believe they now have 6 divisions. Prior to the playoff, Massillon Washington High School had won quite a few state championships voted by the media. The legendary coach, Paul Brown got his start at Massillon and to this day when a little boy is born in town they place a mini-football in the crib.
Ironically, Massillon never won another state championship...until this year. They beat another powerhouse, Akron Hoban 7-2 in a defensive struggle. Hoban's last play was a 4th and goal pass from the 19 where the receiver got his hands on the ball but dropped the pass. Massillon finally won another state title and went undefeated in the process.

My meager contribution: Coach Alan Weddell was my 8th grade football coach at Angleton, Texas was back in the early 70's. After he left us, he went to La Marque, Texas... where his success was unmatched. His teams reached the State Finals six years in a row... losing the first three, then winning the next three..... in a row. A few years ago, he was elected in the Texas Coach HOF. www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/highschool/article/Former-La-Marque-coach-Alan-Weddell-inducted-into-13094640.php"During his last five years as La Marque’s head coach, from 1993-97, Weddell’s teams won 72 of 79 games."We weren't a very good team when he coached us, but we LOVED him. He was TOUGH... but, he was ALL-IN, and we all knew it. So many of the coaches were just plain assholes. We all knew Coach Weddell loved us, and loved football. We all wanted to play well for him. We just lacked the ability. We're still FB friends today.

High school playoffs started around 1972 in Ohio.. Really ? Wow. As best I can find out, they started in 1920 in Texas. I know they always existed as long as I can remember. It seems like Ohio didn’t fully embrace football early on?
