I'm surprised something like this hasn't happened a lot sooner honestly....
I'm surprised G5 schools have not organized something like this.
I also think it would be wise for Oregon State and Washington State to probe into why the SEC (Sankey) wants to change the playoff from a 6+6 format to a 5-7 format after the PAC 12 has been decimated.
So what could the results of this investigation discover?
Its pretty obvious ESPN (ultimately Disney) has their fingers in many pies, including TV contracts with conferences (specifically the SEC), CFP committee rankings presented by ESPN, and a nice cohesive media network that "reports" on the sport

"In the accompanying press release, Moody’s office says it has requested “all communications relating to deliberations to or from the SEC, ACC, NCAA, ESPN, Group of Five conferences, Power Five conferences or any other person relating to the deliberations.” The inclusion of ESPN certainly answers the question of whether or not Florida officials might want to make a run at the Disney entity.
Bill Hancock, the executive director of the College Football Playoff, issued a statement on behalf of the committee, stating that they will review this subpoena demand, but that it is an “overly aggressive reaction” to Florida State’s absence in the CFP.
“We will carefully review this demand for information, but it sure seems to be an overly aggressive reaction to a college football ranking in which some fans somewhere were bound to be disappointed,” said Hancock.
On the surface, it seems bizarre that ESPN was named in this investigation. The network aired the CFP selection show, but there is no evidence of any involvement in the decision."
At minimum, we will find out what we already know...that there is no solid criteria for the CFP committee, that the logic for schools reaching the playoff is based on non-transparent, nebulous garbage that 13 people in a backroom decide upon.
But who knows what else could be discovered...its very obvious ESPN lobbies for the SEC on a constant basis, even giving SEC Commissioner Sankey a platform to weigh in on who the playoff participants should be. So, its really not "bizarre" that ESPN is named in the investigation. In fact, its great to see someone actually push back against the power structure of the sport; the sport that has now gone from 6 major conferences to 5, now down to 2 Massive conferences sucking up all the money in the college football arms race. What I find "bizarre" is how ESPN is connected to every facet of how the sport is structured. Collusion anyone?
The committee was garbage from the first year. While the BCS rankings were unpopular in many ways, they were at least transparent. It took some tweeking to get the formulas balanced with a human element, but overall, each team could see what was occurring with the rankings.
The committee reduced the human element to 13 people, and put the process in a backroom, a boardroom. This was a terrible move for the sport.
The 12 team playoff will alleviate alot of this nonsense, but IMO, the committee needs to go too. Bring back some type of BCS-esque rankings OR have clear and coherent rules for tiebreakers, for determining the 4 conference champs that get byes as well as the At-Large teams.

Then you have the PAC 2 lawsuit going on
Of course SEC jockstrap Sankey is gnashing his teeth to get the PAC 12 removed from having an autobid as soon as he can.
I'm honestly surprised a lawsuit against the CFP/ESPN hasn't happened sooner. G5 schools have been getting screwed for YEARS. I think they finally pissed off the wrong school.

Great. FSU doesn’t get their way, so they decide to blow the whole thing up? Why couldn’t they just wait one more year? Problem solved I applaud FSU for what they are doing which is exposing the fraud that the committee is. Before championship week, FSU was 3, Texas was 4, Bama was 5. What exactly did Texas do that would justify them jumping FSU. Travis was injured several weeks earlier but still remained ahead of Texas. Texas did beat a 3 loss team more handily in the CCG but FSU still beat a higher ranked team by 10 points. They also did it with their 3rd string QB. The committee knew the second string was coming back for the CFP but somehow only focused on the ist string QB injury. There is not a single argument that anyone can make that would justify a 1 loss Texas to jump a 0 loss FSU. So what does the committee do. They make it all about FSU and Alabama. Texas is not even part of the discussion. What the committee did is just plain sickening. |

What I think is that you and Bevo are still hung up on "best team", which is primarily subjective garbage. No one knows who the best team is unless you play it on the field. It's not rocket science here
And the power brokers in college football in fact know this...that's why they are selecting the top 6 conference CHAMPS next year, with the first 4 getting byes. They are NOT simply selecting the 12 "best teams"
Even March Madness gets this right...win your conference tourney and you are in
Everyone with a brain understands that this is how you earn your way into a playoff securely. That's why there is such outrage.
This year, we had 5 good conference champs. Any normal person would put the 3 undefeated teams in, and then try and find a tiebreaker between the 1-loss teams. Fortunately, we had a tie-breaker in H2H results.
This would have left Alabama out though, and the ESPN/SEC machine DID NOT want their SEC champ OUT. So they floated scenarios where Alabama went ahead of Texas and FSU. The FSU QB injury provided the easier excuse, so they went with that. Everyone knows its BS, except the people who are still trying to argue "best team" garbage lol

The TCU snub involved no conference championship game, and the committee and ESPN saying they needed a "13th data point"...literally year 1 of the committee

And to add to the irony of how stupid college football is...the most low IQ fans in sports. People complain about how bad the TCU blowout to Georgia was last year, and that was bad for the playoff.

1) In a 12 team playoff, TCU gets in as an At-Large because they LOST THEIR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. Kansas State would have gotten in over TCU
2) TCU did in fact beat the Big 10 Champ Michigan
Just cause you get blow-outs in championship games doesn't mean you go back and change the whole damn format. There have been many, many Super Bowl blowouts. The NFL didn't freak out and revert to "best teams"
College football fans have a bizarre kind of Stockholm Syndrome, where they really believe all of this garbage put out by ESPN, and then are stunned and shocked when upsets happen.

Using TCU as an argument to deny a team an earned opportunity to avoid a possible blowout is another absurd idea you only find in College Football. The whole best teams thing also drives me nuts. Being better is a competitive advantage only. Every competition that does not resort to voting teams into the playoffs places and advances teams based on the value of their season results according to the rules agreed upon. If a better team does not post better results, the better team is eliminated jst as they would be if it lost a playoff game. |

As Hero said, this system has been FUBAR since it was first started. They've been pretty lucky, other than the first year, there have only been a couple of time when 4 teams wasn't enough to cover all the 'legit contenders'. This year just happens to be the worst.
The committee was charged to pick the "four BEST teams". Basically, that means the 4 teams viewers really want to see play.
'Best team' is, and has ALWAYS been, subjective. Not even a playoff will stop that kind of comparison. Was NC State a "Better Team" than Houston in basketball in 1983? hell no. But they won the playoff. It happens all the time in playoffs. A 'HOT' team can defeat a great team.
I TRULY wanted FSU in... not because I thought it was fair, not because I thought they deserved it.... because I thought they'd be easier to beat than Bama... or UGA, or OSU. By quite a lot. I would surely not have felt that way if their QB hadn't got hurt. But he did. The committee system is not required to go by what is 'deserved'. They're charged with picking the four BEST teams.... today.
So, yea... I'm 'hung up' on that, cause that's what they're TOLD to do, and I think they did it.
Next year.... the gripes will among the 13th and 14th teams. Who will really get excited about that?
No more griping in College football.
Can the sport survive without it??
