I think, it’s Steve Sarkisian. Winning this thing would finally vanquish a lot of personal demons. In 2015, Coach Sark hit rock bottom; Alcohol had defeated him. He lost his job as HC of USC. He lost his marriage. His career looked finished, just as he reached his dream job.
Steve immediately went to rehab and started trying to rebuild. It was Nick Saban who gave him his first shot: as an “analyst” for Bama. A bunch of moves came after that. Slow but steady progression culminating in yet another rebuild project at Texas. His first year for us started Ok, but finished with 6 straight losses. Unheard of in Longhorn land. I must admit, I had my doubts then. But, there were some signs of better things to come.
Sark’s first HC job was at Washington. He did well there, but…. That’s where his drinking problem started. Beating them tonight would be a true vindication of his victory over personal struggles. A Natty would cap the ultimate comeback story. I’m a big believer in the power of “the story”. Sark has a greater goal, a mission, and he has the entire team bought in.
If they pull it off, Coach Sark will surely see a big increase in his $6M salary. But, I don’t think that is what he’s playing for. Personal salvation means a LOT more than money.
Personally, I think he’s got it….just getting us here. I hope he sees it that way, when this is all over. But I also hope he wants just a bit more right now! 🤘🤘🤘
