Despite being a GREAT matchup between two fine teams, and one of the most exciting finishes ever? FEWER people watched this Final than any in the past 18 years!
There's a sure-fire testament to the power of the NCAA to market a product.
The biggest reason, I'm sure has to do with the fact that the game was only available of cable TV. I mean, TruTV? I had a hard time finding it, and I was LOOKING for it. Of course, that won't stop the NCAA. They're contracted this way through 2024... and they reportedly want to EXTEND the contract.
My question is: At the rate things are changing in the manner people watch live sports, why would ANYONE want to contract with cable channels.. ANY cable channels... for an 8+ year term? In 5 years, there may not be ANY cable providers. Who knows?
Starting the games at 9:20 EST doesn't help, IMO. Plus, the tournament itself is getting a little over-saturated. The play-in game in the first week are counter-productive.

8+ years cable contracts? Wow! I have never heard of such a thing before.
My cable system does not require a contract, but the principle competitor requires a 2-year contract for the best deal, or no contract for a higher rate.

Well, I've negotiated 10+ year contracts in the chemical business... although, now that I think about it, two of them were virtually negated after 4 years. ha!
Just seems strange to me, to do so in the TV market.... especially, if you're currently relegated to having your Championship game aired on TruTV, TNT, and TVS.
